You, ma'am, are no Hillary Clinton

To paraphrase the late Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen: I know Hillary Clinton.  Hillary Clinton was a candidate of mine.  You, ma'am, are no Hillary Clinton."

After months of mocking a member of Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Barack Obama's, "lack of foreign affairs" experience, I'm amused at Fox News and the conservative punditry talking about Sarak Pallin's foreign affairs experience given her state's geographical proximity to Russia.

(And is it reassuring to see that Tim Russo's misogyny is bipartisan?)

Did the Palin pick kill the news coverage over Obama's speech?  Sure, but just about any nominee would have.  The fact that McCain did so little vetting of this candidate says something about McCain's judgment.

Let's attack Pallin for her lack of a record.  She's credited for taking on her party's establishment.  But the Republican incumbent she defeated came in third in their primary (with a paultry 15%-- a number only Bob Taft would envy).  And even then, she didn't get over 50% in her party's primary.  She did not even get a majority of the votes in the general election.

Prior to being elected Governor, she had been a Mayor of a small village.  She left a legacy of financial mismangement. (HT: Daily Kos)

Sarah Palin left the finances of her town Wasilla in tatters when she moved on in 2002. She wanted a legacy as mayor, it seems, and pushed hard for the town to build a hyper-expensive sports complex. But Palin screwed the process up badly. Instead of buying the land for the complex when it was offered, her administration allowed a developer named Gary Lundgren to snap it up. Then Wasilla tried to seize the land from Lundgren through eminent domain. In the end, what with court costs Wasilla paid at least $ 1.7 million for land it could have bought for less than one tenth that sum - if the purchase had been handled properly. For this incompetence, Wasilla is still paying a steep price: higher taxes and cutbacks in services.

She's been praised as being the Commander-in-Chief of Alaska's National Guard.  Yet, she's apparently been largely absentee:

Alaska Business Monthly: We've lost a lot of Alaska's military members to the war in Iraq. How do you feel about sending more troops into battle, as President Bush is suggesting?

Palin: I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments  . . .

That was her in March 2007.

During her first term as Governor, she initially supported the "Bridge to Nowhere" until Alaska's congressional delegation couldn't obtain enough in federal earmarks to entirely pay for it.  State spending has exploded under her, with the State having the highest operating budget in its history.

What do some of the people who know Pallin best have to say about her?

"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" Alaska Senate President Lyda Green-- the Republican Senate President.

Obama was actually threatening McCain in turning solid red Alaska blue.  Pallin's approval rating is still high, although dropping as the TrooperGate story has been developing.  McCain picked her because she's a popular Governor in a State where McCain has been underperforming and he wanted to try to peel off any Clinton supporters disappointed that she was not seriously considered and unconvinced by the Convention of Unity.

To suggest that Pallin was picked solely on her genitalia is insulting to her achievement; but to ignore her flaws and suggest that she is an acceptable substitute for Hillary Clinton is insulting to everything Hillary Clinton has stood for.

Love the gender neutral analysis

Great job, Modern. Thank you. And some new info there I didn't know. McCain probably doesn't either. Just read a few minutes ago that his campaign is heading up to AK to check out the trooper story. Maybe they should have done that, like, last week?

Beautiful

Great post, Modern.

Wow

Sarah Palin (correct spelling smart guy) is the pick Obama should've made. Running on empty promises of hope and change, what does Obama's painfully sad lack of foreign experience or knowledge make him do? pick Joe Biden, a three decade serving senator that is surely now the brains of the operation. In Palin, McCain has picked a Governor who is willing to challenge anyone, Republican or Democrat. Barack won't even work with republicans, much less criticize his own party. And it would be insulting to suggest Palin was picked solely on her genitilia (she does have executive experience, and she's running for VP, not President). On the other hand, suggesting Obama was picked solely on his pigmentation, well, that might not be too far off.

Got some statements from Bobby Jindal?

Or any of the other GOP VP hopefuls whose thought bubbles were bursting under the weight of dissing affirmative action all these years?

This candidate possessess many qualities that other candidates possess, but McCain chose her because she is woman.  He did not select her, over any of the others, because of the many qualities she possesses that the others possess.

As for Obama, voters selected him, not a small cabal that only met with him twice before deciding that he was worthy.

Yes, I know that Obama was selected by voters

I never said anything differently.  Doesn't change the meaning of the sentence.

And, sorry about McCain's selection of a true "change" candidate.  Barack does talk a lot about changing Washington.  I would like to see him act now.  Talk is talk.  To do is to do. Obama really set a lot of people up for disappointment now that he is standard democratic candidate.

Are you purposely missing the fault in your logic?

I didn't SAY you said anything differently. I'm pointing out that your analogy fails because of the difference.  That failure makes the sentence meaningless.

Huh?

Explain to me how my analogy fails?  Because, quite honestly, I believe a lot of voters picked Obama because of his skin color.  Not solely, but trust me, it played a big part.  So, the fault in my logic?  The only fault would be speculating.  But seeing as how everything written on this blog and all other blogs is 90% speculation, my logic is about as infallible as yours.

Concrete

Wow - I keep observing how concrete certain sectors of voters are and you are helping keep the image.

Obama - where he is - because American voters cast votes for him to be their nominee for the Dem ticket

Sarah Palin - where she is - because small group of absolute partisans decided she should be their party's choice for the GOP ticket

If you don't get the difference between who okay'd their selection, that is your loss because you will keep propogating the same faulty analogy.

As an added bonus - read the New York Times today. It indicates that she never discussed this offer with her family and that her kids were simply "told" that their mother would be running as the VP.

Could you imagine what Republicans would have to say if that was how Obama or Biden decided to accept the offer to be on the ticket or run for the nomination?

Wow

Ok. Since I read that Nick D said no attacks on people, only ideas, I don't have much to say.  It's evident that I know the difference between the election of Obama and the selection of Palin.  I think you just don't seem to get it.

And, I dunno what Republicans would have to say if that was how Obama or Biden decided to accept the offer blah blah blah.  I would assume the same way that moronic liberals, including Self-Proclaimed "Today's Edward Murrow" Keith Olbermann would:  with a special comment in which he finds himself immensely clever and intelligent.  Edward R. Murrow is spinning in his grave each time Olbermann disgraces his trademark sign-off.

Just sunk in...

She didn't know - or apparently care? - that they were taking about sending more troops from a population the size of Cuyahoga County to Iraq. Are you kidding me? I know she now has a son in the military, so hopefully her perspective has changed, but as the sister of a Navy officer, I like to think that when there are discussions about sending Ohio reservists to Iraq, Ted Strickland knows and cares.

No Hillary Clinton

I believe Modern was referring to Lloyd Bentsen, V.P. candidate with Dukakis in 1988, and his famous debate with Dan Quayle.

You Should've Ended It With...

I know Lloyd Bentsen.  Lloyd Bentsen was a friend of mine. Modern, you are no Lloyd Bentsen

Wait--what?

Dear JimDandy,

Please make more sense.

Thanks,

~Not Following

No Problem

Just direct me on what I need to make more sense about

Alright!

I don't think it has anything to do with my argument.  I think it says a lot about yourself if you aren't able to follow.

Hillary's Biggest Problem...

...will be to keep Bill away from her. Wink

You're right

Sarah Palin is only at Barack Obama's level experience wise, not Hillary Clinton's
