Will Portman Ever Learn?

David Potts - Posted on 03 March 2010

Yet more people are coming forward to tell Robert Portman that you can’t condemn something and still raise money for it.

The Cleveland Jewish News ran a story today originally titled “State reps urge Portman to sever ties over "Nazi" past” but this was apparently too offensive to those who still support calling legislators “Nazis”. It’s now titled “State reps urge Portman to sever ties over group's "Nazi" posting”.

Any hope the Portman campaign had about this issue being forgotten should be buried along with their integrity, because this isn’t over.

Once again, COAST has repeatedly refused my requests for them to identify the names of the people with access to their Twitter account, and haven’t directly retracted or apologized for any of their outrageous comments.

Portman knew all this and had a choice to make. And now he has to live with the consequences of his actions.

On Wednesday morning, March 3, the Cleveland Jewish News posted an article on www.clevelandjewishnews.com about U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman’s appearance before a group that referred to lawmakers as “Nazis” in a post on the group’s website. A typographical error in the CJN headline inferred Portman had a Nazi “past” rather than referring to a Nazi “post.” The CJN corrected the error as soon as it was discovered less than a few hours later. The article itself was a fair and balanced report on Democrats calling for Portman to sever ties with the group, and Portman’s campaign condemning the group’s comments. The CJN regrets any confusion caused by its error. Michael E. Bennett Publisher and Editor
