What I'd Do If I Were Husted
Hold on to your pants, because it's not all that surprising.
Jon Husted doesn't want to see Governor Strickland's budget passed. No matter how many calls for bipartisanship are made, or meetings between the two, or touchy feely sessions take place remember that Husted is a loyal member of the opposition. He's a Republican. A Republican who thinks that he's headed for higher office no less. He wants to keep the base happy, make sure the fight continues, and get in the press.
I've been told that earlier the GOP promised to release the Governor's budget from committee for a vote by Thursday. I don't know if that plan still holds true, but I've also heard there's a caveat. In the remaining hours that HB 119 is open for discussion, the GOP will tack so many Easter Eggs on to it that Dems will have to swallow a poison pill just to pass the budget. The kicker is they're going to do it in a manner that makes sure the Democrats in Columbus don't have time to read the amendments. Ultimately they'll be asked to vote for the Governor's budget and pass a whole host of amendments that nullify the Executive's intent, or vote against the budget their party proposed. Neither are very appealing options
No real surprise here. Yesterday we saw the first signs of this sort of activity with "Husted's $100 million Scholarship Bonanza Give Away!!!!"...which by the way, guts health care for poor kids. And that'll be the plan for the remaining time this budget is under consideration... Expect to see a whole lot more crazy and irresponsible ideas out of the GOP in their effort to derail the train.
