Well, Spitzer's Screwed

Administrator - Posted on 10 March 2008

The guy's toast if this is true. Nothing D.C. loves more than prostitutes.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He is set to make an announcement about 2:15 this afternoon at his Manhattan office.

I'm glued to my teevee now, waiting for Spitzer's statement.

UPDATE: From this morning's New York Sun, writing about an ongoing prostitution ring that's being prosecuted.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan, Yusill Scribner, would not comment when asked whether a public official was among the clients of the Emperors Club. But the involvement of the public corruption unit raised eyebrows among the defense lawyers.

Sucks for Eliot if he's that public official.

UPDATE x2: He just made his statement, said he "needs time to rebuild the trust with his family." It sure sounded like an acknowledgment that the allegations are true. He did not deny. He should be back on MSNBC in a few more minutes.

UPDATE x3: just saw the video of his speech. He got his wife to stand behind him. She didn't look too chipper. I can't believe he asked her to stand with him.

UPDATE x4: And they're saying he will step down, but it's uncomfirmed.

if he resigns?

If Spitzer resigns, Lt. Gov. David Paterson would assume the Governor's Office.  Mr. Paterson is already a DNC member and superdelegate.  He has endorsed HRC.  This reduces the total number of superdelegates from NY by one, since whoever is appointed to replace Paterson as LG would not automatically become a super.

As a New Yorker I was struck by the similarities between New York and Ohio when I went to work in Ohio in 2006. Both states had been under Republican rule for over a decade and watched as the state crumbled... Both states had their Democratic hopes for the future - and ours was Elliot Spitzer. He was an amazing attorney general, and all of us just knew that he would be the guy to return New York to greatness... I feel so betrayed right now - it goes even beyond red and blue, Dem. and Rep. Not even a month ago, I was talking with my mom how President Obama was going to work young, modern thinking Governor's like Spitzer and get this country back on the right path... My brother would want me to point out that at least it was women and not little boys - but right now, i'm crushed... I'm assuming like Alan G. Hevesi, New York won't stand for his bull shit and he will resign as well. Sad sad sad day!
just dropped by one.
I would tell him to stay since her husband went throught he same thing. I am sick of the puritanism in this country. I want Warren Harding back. It is time for the United States to grow up. Prostitution is a victimless crime when involving adults who are able to make their own choices. I don't care what people think about this I am neither a feminist or a Christian and once was a card carrying member of the Libertarian Party before it went neo-con.

Oh, come on , I can't believe there really are still people out there who care about the bedtime antics of politicians. Who cares? It's between him and Mrs, and the fact that the oldest profession in the world is still even illegal in most areas here, smacks of just how screwed up our priorities are and how really far we are behind most of Europe. No wonder they look at us as a bunch of reality tv spoon fed disfunctional psuedo puritans

He prosecuted this shit. He campaigned on bringing back honesty to the office. It's against the law. That's enough for me to throw the book at him, and it makes him a hypocrite.

Just because it involves sex we shouldn't automatically say "it's a private issue."

Prostitutes are a little different than just cheating on the misses.

I still think an honest discussion on Prostitution and sex in geberal and public life needs to happen. Soime of the most corrupt pols are here in the states and often they are the most supposedly Christian. In Europe this isn't an issue. I wouldn't have prodsecuted prostitution if I were attorney general unless it was W prostituting to the saudis.

If he thought prostitution was a bad law - he could have changed it... Jerid actally said it best: "He prosecuted this shit. He campaigned on bringing back honesty to the office. It's against the law. That's enough for me to throw the book at him, and it makes him a hypocrite."
Brody, Eliot Spitzer could not have changed the law. For starters, his approval rating was below 40% and even if he sought to make prostitution legal in the state of New York, he didn't have the support to do so. Employing state police as political spies doesn't usually inspire loyal Democrats to rush to your defense. But that's not the point. Spitzer isn't being investigated for breaking a state law. He violated the Mann Act, passed in 1910. The Mann Act makes it illegal to transport any woman across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. It was passed as a southern Democratic reaction to the first black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, who married a white woman and took interstate trains with her. Spitzer allegedly arranged for a prostitute from NYC to meet him at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, on February 13. What a guy! A wife and three daughters and he arranged a rendezvous with a hooker the day before Valentine's Day. What a guy!

He was elected in 2006 by the largest majority in the state of New York's history... He was incredibly popular and until all hell broke loose on the immigrant driver license thing he could have pooped on a piece of paper, called it a bill and gotten it past through Silver and Bruno's Legislature. But that doesn't matter either...

My point wasn't about what he felt about the law either way - he knew the law, he knew how they bust people who break that kind of law - and he used tax payer dollars on hotel rooms, where he then broke the law...

My state needs a leader that can fix all of the problems, not one doing his stint in Rehab... I want his resignation today - and the first Prez candidate to call for it has my vote!!!

Shock! Surprised Disbelief! Frown Oh my! Foot in mouth What do these numbers say?

He was indeed quite popular "until all hell broke loose on the immigrant driver license thing." But then "all hell broke loose on the immgrant driver license thing," and his popularity dropped dramatically. 35%, no crack. Thanks for asking, though.

What's remarkable is this; News ran for about 30 seconds regarding story about some ruthless animal who brutally beat, raped and then killed a girl by throwing her off a cliff. Then, a full two hours on Spitzer's victimless crime of soliciting a hooker. Polls all over various sites popped up asking should Spitzer resign. Why didn't we see polls asking whether or not this scum animal, who took this innocent girl's lfe, should be fried or not? Reminds me too back when video stores yanked all the Pee Wee Herman videos because the guy pleasured himself in an adult theatre and then turned around and ''stocked'' all their store with O.J Simpson videos when Simpson was accused of decapitating two people.
