Two charter school teachers accused of assaulting students... (but no criminal charges?)

From today's Columbus Dispatch:

A second teacher at an East Side charter school is being investigated for inappropriate discipline after a sixth-grade teacher was fired for getting physical with a student.

Aleca Bryan, 28, was fired on Monday. Officials wouldn't name the second teacher yesterday, but that educator has been suspended with pay, said Allison Perz, who oversees the Columbus Arts and Technology Academy.

...

Bryan was fired after a 13-year-old Reynoldsburg boy said she grabbed him and slammed him against the wall in the school's hallway. The boy told police she also dug her nails into his arms and that a witness who intervened had trouble pulling the teacher away.

Franklin County Children Services said it can't find a record of a complaint filed against the teacher, although Perz said the agency was contacted. No criminal charges have been filed. The school has not notified police or children services about the second teacher now under investigation, Perz said.

The school is run by a for-profit company called Mosaica Education Inc. Mosaica officials refused to release Bryan's personnel file and records of any investigation conducted by the school, which are public records in Ohio.

So, let's see.  We have two teachers who are accused of what should constitute assault, a misdemeanor in the first degree.  Incidentially, if the students had been the perpetrators, and not the victims, then they could be facing a felony charge of assault.  What the hell is going on in the State of Ohio that an adult teacher will face a less serious criminal charge for assaulting a student than if the juvenile assaults the adult?  While I don't expect a child to assault his teacher, I do expect that a teacher, who is in a position of trust, to show more restraint, and I think the potential consequences should be more severe than misdemeanor asault.

All that aside, don't think for a moment that the profit motive didn't play into this at all.  In two cases, neither Children Services nor local law enforcement was contacted in what is undeniably a crime.  Despite the matters being public record, the school refuses to release the name of the teacher or any public records related to the incidents.

I'm shocked that the Dispatch learned of this at all given the apparent secrecy the for-profit charter school is trying to maintain.

And if Children Services and local law enforcement haven't been notified, then exactly who is conducting this supposed investigation?  The charter school's company?  Can anyone have any faith in such an investigation?

And to think people like Bill Todd, Matt Naugle, and Scott Pullins wanted to force Columbus' children into charter schools like this one.   Disgraceful.

Leave me Out

I'm a fan of home schools for some, not a fan of public schools, either charter or otherwise. Thanks.

Sorry, Scott

But this recent post on your blog suggested to me that your a defender of Ohio's charter school system.  I know it was a "cut and paste" job, but the lack of any editorial comments from you and the fact that you posted it verbatim would seem to suggest that you agree with the charter schools advocates' attack on Governor Strickland's comments that the way charter schools have been done in Ohio is shameful.  A sentiment proven by the very story this post is about.

Care to clarify?

Sure, why not.

The group that sent me the info is a group affiliated with online schools that cater to home schoolers. I like home schooling as an option for many parents and kids.

I don't particularly care for public schools, public charter schools and so on. I don't support forcing anyone into any kind of a one size fits all educational solution. I think that it is the height of stupidity to force every child to sit in a classroom all day long.

I don't support covering up criminal acts by teachers, hiding charter school records and so on.

I guess I don't see a lot of difference between unaccountable public schools run by union leaders and unaccountable charter schools run by corporations.

Thanks.

Fair enough...

I'll correct the post then based on these comments. But you understand why based on that post I thought you were an advocate for charter schools.

Scott: Here's a difference

Naomi Klein writes about this in "Shock Doctrine." Chile had very high literacy rates with a public school system before Pinochet took over. Then the schools were privitized and there was no profit motive to educate poor kids. Literacy rates plummeted. This is why Thomas Jefferson advocated for free public education through the COLLEGE LEVEL for those who demonstrate the necessary abilities.

Two charter school teachers...

I know one of the teachers personally and I just want to say that just because something is on the news, doesn't mean it happened the way they said it did. And just because someone gets fired, doesn't mean they are guilty of anything. I believe that this teacher was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and I know that she is not guilty of what "the news" says she is guilty of. Take "the news" with a grain of salt people.
