[UPDATED] Tim Ryan for Senate '10?

Consider this one of the stories we almost missed last week:

Nothing says "I'm exploring a run for the U.S. Senate" like attending rubber chicken dinners on the other side of the State from your district.

So on April 19th, Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Youngstown) is going to be the keynote speaker at the Clermont County Democratic Party's dinner.  Ryan was one of several being recruited to run in 2006, but instead supported Paul Hackett over Sherrod Brown.  His support for Hackett alone should give Ryan a jump in SWO.

Ryan has, of course, gotten quite a national following given some of the most fiery speeches on the floor of Congress against the war in Iraq.

(HT: Cincinnati Enquirer's Politics Extra Blog)

Ryan has a good base in NEO.  His prior support for Paul Hackett should help him make inroads in SWO and SEO as he improves his name recognition.  Ryan has the ability to unite old Democratic constituencies like labor and new groups like young, urban progressives.

I've heard Lee Fisher as a possible candidate, too.  Any other names in the running? [UPDATE]: A commenter mentioned Senate Minority Leader Ray Miller.  Let me clarify my question about who else is in the running-  I meant people who actually have a chance of getting the nomination.  At this point, Ray Miller will be doing well just to finish the year as Senate Minority Leader.

Yes! Tim Ryan for Senate '10

Here's one from SWO who remembers that Ryan campaigned with Hackett in Hackett's Congressional bid.  He's a very appealing speaker and should make the Clermont Co. Dem. dinner their best ever, especially since Dems have previously been out-registered by Repubs about 3 or 4 to 1 in Clermont Co. Wth all the new Dem. registrations for the primary just passed, would hope there would be a lot more interest in Dem activity in Jean Schmidt's home couonty.

Love to watch Ryan, Kendrick Meeks and Debbie Wassermann-Schultz (both FL) as the Thirty-Somethings in Congress on C-Span when all the other Congress people  have left for the night.  (per my  comment on it in the Enquirer).  Several newly elected Thirty-Somethings have been added since the '06 election, but, like SNL in its early days, nothing beats the originals.

Or Maybe.....

Tim Ryan's office was just reading BSB and decided to help some fellow Dems out. http://www.buckeyestateblog.com/help_iso_guest_speaker_for_4_19_clermont_dems_golden_donkey_dinner ...because his office does read.

We don't just read you guys....

We LOVE you guys.

Brad

So, Brad....

Why's the big man traveling across the State? Is it, as Jerid suggests, just to help out a county party that couldn't find a headliner (hear that, Lee Fisher?), or has Ryan been taking a look down that long hallway through the Rotundra one too many times? Cause I'm sure he's not doing it just for the free meal... (he is getting comp'ed right?)

I just noticed this thread after posting my update

Thanks for your help in pulling this together, Brad!  We are excited about having Congressman Ryan as our speaker.   Smile

"Wth all the new Dem.

You guys can't have it both ways, either the crossover votes are 'New Democrats' and you want them to do party buiding activities with you or you want to charge them and their leader, Rush Limbaugh, with voter fraud. Realistically, what % of the new people are 'New Democrats' and what % are just part of Limbaugh's 'Operation Chaos'? Cool

"What % of the new people are "New Democrats"....

Well, we'll soon find out.  Guess they'll all be on the Dem. mailing and phone lists.  We'll see if attendance at the dinner and later in the voting booth picks up from the past.  Notice Clermont Co., along with other SWO counties,  did not volunteer for Brunner's audit.

The black voters in Clermont Co., Rep. or Dem., are few and far between.

Hey, everyone likes a free meal

Didn't Tim Ryan once go a whole week eating the equivilant of food stamps... I bet he is in need of a free meal!!!

This is my signature ... it goes on every post ---- > "Republicans don't need black voters, but they want them. Democrats don't want black voters, but they need them" -  Rev. Jesse Jackson

Deafening Silenece from Magi

Magi still has not responded to my comment: How are the Republicans going to get black votes if they keep running ads like this?

African practice of Slavery

Being that Slavery was imported into the USA from Africa, I see this whole fuss about prejudice as a tool to defeat democracy today. As can any culture, the Black culture can take care of itself. However many choose to play the Black Prejudice Card and remain enslaved to their non productive mannerisms. Prejudice is a freedom. They have already defeated the constitution by insisting upon slavery by practicing it, and further their cause by restricting freedom. They even go so far as to kill without being held accountable, slam other cultures without being held accountable, and practice tribal intimidation to the point of being 90% of the population in Washington, D.C. What I do not like is the fact that the white culture is nearing a return to slavery as before in Egypt.

For some reason I'm not able

For some reason I'm not able to see the ad, guess I don't have the correct plug-in ... I can't defend every single thing every Republican does just as you can't defend every single thing a Democrat does. If the problem is systemic it should probably be addressed ... for instance, if every Democratic governor was screwing prostitutes we might have a problem ... but it was an isolated incident.

Problem is systemic

Magi, I'd recommend installing Windows Media Player or Apple Quicktime if you have a Mac.

I'm trying to convince you that there is a systemic problem. Whether its Willie Horton from 1988, or the Harold Ford Jr ad last year, or a thousand of them in between, the GOP has consistently demonized black people in their TV ads, which have as their central message: "black people = something to fear = GOP will protect you from them."

If the GOP wants black votes, they need to knock that shit off.

McThursty, you might want to

McThursty, you might want to ease back on your crack usage ... I can't even tell if you're a Liberal or Conservative. I picture someone in Nigeria sitting in a pay-as-you-go internet oasis, sipping Red Bull and smoking cigars.

Tim Ryan Doesn't Stand a Chance

Let's be honest. Ray Miller and his political machine have this one locked up.

COACH WOODY MAIZE

Are you Ray Miller?

Probably not. Because not even Ray Miller can honestly believe he's got a chance of being the Senate nominee in two years. He'll be lucky to still be the Senate Minority Leader by the end of the year...

In his short tenure as Senate Minority Leader (a position he took in a power play coup claiming he would be better situated to help the Democrats gain seats in the State Senate this cycle), he has been one embarassing headline after another and has raised zero money for the caucus.

That's not hyperbole.  The man raised nothing for the caucus since becoming Minority Leader.

How anyone with his record of campaign finance violations and hubris coming home to roost thinks he has a snowball's chance in hell of getting the Democratic Senate nomination in '10 over Lt. Governor Lee Fisher or Congressman Tim Ryan is nothing more than delusions of grandeur.

Have you ever met Sar Casm?

Do you live south of I-70 and outside of Dayton? If not, what's your excuse for believing that to be an honest sentiment?

Actually I think Republicans

Actually I think Republicans and Democrats demonize whoever they are running against ... doesn't matter if they are black or white. Maybe black people offer better material for demonizing because they generally aren't held accountable because they are black? When I saw the clips of Reverend Wright, I thought to myself, "Here's a man who has no freekin' clue leading a bunch of people with no freekin' clue." ... as did MOST conservatives. It had nothing to do with him being black it was him being out in left field ... I will NEVER EVER EVER see eye to eye with this man ... not even if we were sugically joined at the hip and forces to live the rest of our lives attached! The black community has to somehow find a way to join the American Culture, and it's not going to happen on the current path they are on. They are too focused on "Keepin' it Real." When black people are successful they generally move to white neighborhoods and life the good life. I have neighbors who are black and they told me they wanted out of the crazziness of the black community. It's not about race, it's about culture ... what culture do you cultivate?

The Fern will stop Ryan in

The Fern will stop Ryan in his tracks. Lee Fisher is Ron Malones water boy. Ron, Ted and Hilary's team still picks the ticket and control the party.

hahaha

If all of the following happens, my two good working kidneys will both be yours:

1) Ryan runs for Senate

2) Redface runs for Senate

3) Redface gets more than 30% of the vote in the primary

4) some old lady doesn't smack Redface in his red face for being so smarmy

nov1976

might be the last time Ron Malone was relevant in Ohio politics.  Chris Redfern is not running for Senate in 2010.  Neither is Lee Fisher.  Redfern is not a viable candidate and Fisher wants to be governor, not Senator.

That's not what will Happen... Redfern wants this:

in 2010 Redfern is going to push for Marcy Kaptur to run for Senate, he'll pull all the strings so she is either not challenged or if she is that she wins the nomination ... Then Chris Redfern can run and win her congressional seat...

That will also not happen

Chris Redfern has no interest in being a small fish in a big pond like Washington, DC.  He will be running for Auditor in 2010, not Congress.

Are you serious???

I was only half serious about Redfern as a C-man; but I can't even fathom him running for something as stupid and pointless as a state Auditor!!! I'm assuming you are kidding - but it brings up a point - what are we going to do with Mr. Redfern once he's done as the ODP chair... I'm thinking that we could get him a big Chief Wahoo hat and give him a job as mascot for the Indians... Or he'd make a great Brutus Buckeye... Labron James could use a chauffer... Maybe a local cable access talk show... I'll have to give it some thoughts - anyone else have any good ideas?

actually the auditor scenario

is very plausible for the fern. i've heard it several times from several different people. the auditor sits on the apportionment board which we need to control in order to redraw the state leg districts. i wouldn't be surprised to see him make that move at all.

I've heard this as well...

I've overheard a few local party leaders speculate about Redfern running for Auditor. They seemed to think it was likely.

wow - I find that amazing

Wow - okay well I apologize - I really thought that had to be an April Fools or something!!!  I still can't imagine an ego like that taking a thankless job like Auditor, but you guys know better than I...

But - Be Honest - Redfern would still make a great tour guide for the Rock & Roll Hall of fame!!!

Apportionment Board

If they convened today, we'd have a 3-2 majority.  Husted will take a shot at Brunner in 2010 to try to switch the balance back in the hands of the R's.  Assuming at least one of the two (Brunner and Fern) win their race, we will maintain the majority (I am of the opinion that no one the R's bring can handle Strickland).

Can someone confirm, though, that once the lines are re-drawn, the measure must be passed by the General Assembly?  If so, the D's will not be able to do much, as the R's will be in control of the Senate for the forseeable future.

Confused

Sunglasses, this is a common confusion around the Apportionment Board. The Board draws the district lines for State House and State Senate seats. There's no approval from the General Assembly, their word pretty much goes.

However, drawing Congressional district lines is NOT done by the apportionment board, but rather by the General Assembly.

The Apportionment board ONLY does the State House and State Senate lines. The Congressional districts are drawn in an ordinary bill passed through the state house and senate and signed by the Governor.

When does the reapportionment board redraw the districts in 2010

because that changes the ballgame completely. Does that occur after the '10 general?

2011

Lisa the districts will be re-drawn in 2011 and won't be in effect until the 2012 general.
