The brilliance of the John McCain campaign...
So thanks to Mitt Romney pledging his delegates, John McCain clinches the Republican nomination tonight. And while the Democratic campaign continues, what brilliant idea does the McCain campaign come up with to launch his general election strategy?
An overblown press event where McCain will receive the endorsement of President Bush...Of course he does this after the speech he is currently giving where McCain puts Iraq front and center.
So, five minutes after securing the Republican nomination, John McCain has kicked off his general election strategy by bringing up the biggest negative issue for the entire Republican Party (Iraq.) And what's shocking is that since Iraq is not the top issue for most voters, McCain didn't even need to go there. Instead he focuses on the issue that is an unquestionable liabilty for his party instead of focusing on the economy.
McCain's plan for the economy- less taxes and regulations. Except that, of course, after eight years of the Bush Administration, what regulations and taxes are left to cut?
So after focusing on the worst issue for his party, tomorrow John McCain will go get his photo taken with the biggest liability of his party: The President.
For as much as people talked about "Clinton fatigue" in 2000, the facts are that Bill Clinton was still largely popular and had high approval ratings. George Bush has the worst polling record in modern American politics.
Get your picture taken with Mr. 32% approval rating. Hell of a way to launch your general election strategy. Hell, Al Gore didn't do an endorsement event with Bill Clinton after securing the Democratic nomination in 2000, and Bill had an approval rating in the 60s% at the time... If people had fatigue over Bill Clinton; they absolutely are ready to riot over Bush.
I love the idea of using pictures of John McCain and George Bush together until November. Even Ken Blackwell was smart enough to scrub his website of any pictures of him with the President. And he still lost... hard.
Absolutely brilliant move on John McCain's part. Can't wait to hear the President's endorsement tomorrow. And I can't wait to recite it every day until Election Day.
Final note: is there any way you can make McCain sounds more out of touch with the times than using a golden oldie classic like "Johnnie B. Goode" as your campaign song?? Did they rule out something from the jazz era as too vulgar?

WASHINGTON (AP) - Officials in Michigan and Florida are showing renewed interest in holding repeat presidential nominating contests so that their votes will count in the epic Democratic campaign.
The Michigan governor, along with top officials in Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign and Florida's state party chair, are now saying they would consider holding a sort of do-over contest by June. That's a change from their previous insistence that the primaries their states held in January should determine how the their delegates are allocated.
Clinton won both contests, but the results were meaningless because the elections violated national party rules.
The Democratic National Committee stripped both states of all their delegates for holding the primaries too early, and all Democratic candidates—including Clinton and rival Barack Obama—agreed not to campaign in either state. Obama's name wasn't even on the Michigan ballot.
Florida and Michigan moved up their dates to protest the party's decision to allow Iowa and New Hampshire to go first, followed by South Carolina and Nevada, giving them a disproportionate influence on the presidential selection process.
But no one predicted the race would still be very close this late in the year.
Ironically, Michigan and Florida could have held crucial primaries if they had stayed with their traditional later dates. They may yet do so if they decide to hold new contests as Clinton and Obama compete to the wire.
Clinton has been insisting that the desires of more than 2 million people who cast Democratic ballots in the two states should be reflected at the convention, which would help her catch up to Obama in the race for convention delegates. Obama has said he wants to see the delegates from the two critical swing states participate, too, but not if Clinton is rewarded for victories in boycotted primaries. more
