Phil Heimlich files to run in Primary against Jean Schmidt: OH02

According to Cincinnati.com, Phil Heimlich, defeated last November by David Pepper (D)in his re-election bid to the Hamilton County Commission, has filed to run in the Republican primary for the Congressional seat now held by Jean Schmidt in OH-02. He has the support of COAST, a conservative anti-tax organization.

Will Scott Pullins Sue Me Next?

The Columbus Dispatch has picked up on Ohio attorney Scott Pullins' little legal fued with other bloggers. While they try to give some national context via libel laws, this is the first time they could find a blogger sueing another blogger/commenter for harrassment.

Here's what Mr. Pullins had to say:

Pullins says St. Jean’s postings on message boards serving the Mount Vernon area cause him severe emotional distress and make him fear for his safety and that of his family. He asked a judge Friday to grant a civil stalking protection order to prohibit St. Jean from using the Internet or other forms of communication to "menace" him.

He allegedly gets even crazier, in my opinion, at RABid.

Did our founders really put their lives, their sacred honor, and their fortunes on the line so that anonymous posters could call me a douchebag? Did they face hanging so that Matt Naugle could be called an asshole or Senor Taco? So that David Harbarger could be called an ambulance chaser?
Men and women are fighting and dying today so that anonymous posters can call me fat and bald? My wife a fat ass? Please.
To say that it shames the memory of those that put it all on the line is just not enough.

This from a guy that claimed Ted Strickland was gay, insinuated Barbara Sykes was cheating on her husband, and said Ted Strickland didn't live in his Congressional District. Pathetic.

Satirical Schmidt Endorsement

The Cincinnati Dealer, Cincinnati's own version of The Onion, recently endorsed Jean Schmidt. Pretty funny. Thought I'd post.

Jean just keeps stepping in it. On the day the Cincinnati Enquirer endorsed Schmidt, Jean, came out in favor of a nuclear waste site in her district. The most recent poll posted here suggests that this may have won her lots of fans.

2ND DISTRICT - Jean Schmidt evidently never learned that plagiarism was bad.�� Maybe she should have finished that degree.�� In stunning news last night, it was revealed that an editorial "written" by Schmidt for the Community Press on Sept 13, 2006, read awfully like an editorial Congresswoman Deborah Pryce published on her U.S. House website earlier on July 10, 2006.�� It was so awfully similar that... well, they're identical.�� The plagiarism was as blatant as Schmidt is short.

After numerous calls to her office for comment were unsuccessful, a press release was thrown quickly out of the door to her campaign headquarters before the door was shut again.��

It read:�� "While Congresswoman Pryce's and Congresswoman Schmidt's columns were very similar, this was not a case of plagiarism.�� Using the same words, in the same sequence, and in the same quantity does not necessarily imply plagiarism.�� Also, note that in the first paragraph, Ms. Pryce uses the word 'Congress', while Ms. Schmidt uses the word 'Republicans'.�� I think the evidence speaks for itself."

Congressional gadfly Nate Noy was contacted for a comment via phone.�� Through cackling laughter, Noy guffawed, "Ain't no hidden shadow and sweatpants gonna save her this time!"

Republicans Put Schmidt on Endangered Species List

In case anyone hasn't figured it out by now, here's more proof that the Republican Party is seriously concerned about Jean Schmidt's chances for re-election.

As The Hill reports today, party bosses like John Boehner are throwing together a last-minute fundraiser in a desperate attempt to aid nine Republican congresswomen whom they describe as "vulnerable" and "endangered."

One of the nine on this "endangered species list"? None other than Ms. Schmidt herself.

But hey - she worked hard to put herself there.

Vic Volunteer of the Week: Craig Scheidler

Craig Scheidler is only 15 years old, but he's already making his mark on politics here in Ohio's 2nd District.

With nothing but an Internet connection and some inspiring prose, Craig has raised almost $2,000 for the Dr. Victoria Wulsin Campaign.

He started by setting up his own fundraising page on the website http://www.actblue.com/ . Then he posted stories about the race on the Daily Kos weblog community ( http://www.dailykos.com/ ).

"My main message was a feeling of hope - that Dr. Wulsin has the ability to win and beat Jean Schmidt," Craig says. He included a link to his online donation page at the end of each message - and soon over 50 contributors had responded to his appeal.

Now here's the challenge: Craig thinks every strong Wulsin supporter can do what he did.

Bush Won't Be Seen with Schmidt?

The Vice President snubbing Schmidt is one thing - but now George W. Bush himself is coming to Indian Hill for a fundraiser, and there's one name that's conspicuously absent from the invitation. As the Cincinnati Enquirer reports:

Rep. Jean Schmidt, the Miami Township Republican who represents the 2nd District, where the fundraiser is being held, is NOT listed among the event hosts.

I guess 53 percent of Ohio 2nd voters aren't the only ones embarrassed by their Congresswoman.

Fighting Bioterror: Dr. Wulsin's Plan

This week, the national security blog TaylorMarsh.com is featuring new candidates for Congress explaining how they can do a better job in the War on Terror than our current leaders.

On Saturday, Dr. Wulsin, a longtime public health expert with frontlines experience in fighting epidemics, discussed the threat of bioterrorism. She highlighted three vital areas where the government is currently failing to protect us from bioterror threats, and offered these recommendations:

Provide full support for the police, fire, medical personnel, and other public servants who serve as our first line of defense against bioterrorism. ...According to the International Association of Fire Fighters, only 13% of fire departments can handle a hazardous material and emergency medical services incident involving chemical and biological agents with their current staff.

Ensure that all levels of our prevention network are properly coordinated. ...on May 25, my opponent, Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, voted against funding for the Metropolitan Medical Response Team, the organization that coordinates local efforts to prepare and respond to a terrorist attack (HR 5441, Amendment 943). That same day, she voted against funding for the Emergency Management Performance Grant program, which provides for emergency planning, training of emergency personnel, exercising and testing emergency response plans, and enhancing communications and warning capabilities (HR 5441, Amendment 946).

Invest in immunization, prevention, and scientific research so we can protect our nation in the years and decades ahead. ...Prevention should be the guiding principle behind our homeland security policy.

Schmidt Shatters Marathon Record Like Weak Democratic Spine

CINCINNATI - Congresswoman Jean Schmidt set a new world record in the marathon this week with a time of twenty-three minutes.

She broke Paula Radcliffe's old mark of 2:15:25 by over an hour and forty-five minutes and took more than an hour and a half off the current��men's pace.

Officials used pictures from Schmidt's website to determine her world-record time of 00:23:00.��

The record was the first for the 13th-annual Schmidtville Marathon of Southwestern Ohio. Thousands of Schmidt-izens��were on hand��for the event.

"She was so fast,"��Tanya Lake of Batavia said, "no one saw her��finish."��

Nathan Noy, an independent challenger in the 2nd district, filed a grievance about the Schmidt results.

"I think her under a mile-a-minute pace speaks for itself," Noy said.

A spokesman for the Schmidt campaign suggested Noy grow some cahunas and cut-and-run his own marathon.

The Vice President will be schmoozing with Steve Chabot and his West Side friends tonight, but doesn��t have time in his schedule for embattled incumbent Jean Schmidt.

Why not?

Because Schmidt campaign manger Barry Bennett asked ��Who��d show up, anyway?��
Because Cheney is too busy training for a marathon.

Because Cheney is angry that Schmidt has only rubber-stamped the Bush Administration��s policy 87% of the time.

Who knows, though...Maybe Schmidt just couldn't find the VP's undisclosed location.

Schmidt STILL Out to Lunch!

Last week, when Dr. Wulsin delivered a formal debate challenge to Jean Schmidt's campaign office, she found nothing but a sign reading "Gone to lunch."

Yesterday, several Wulsin staffers jogged over to deliver another challenge to Ms. Schmidt. As the Cincinnati Enquirer reports:

Democratic congressional candidate Victoria Wulsin, as part of a push to get incumbent Republican Jean Schmidt to commit to a series of debates, challenged the congresswoman in her own sport Monday.

She suggested that they take each other on in a 5K charity race next month.

"If she whips me in a foot race, then I want to totally whip her in the debates," said Wulsin.

To the deliverers' dismay, however, Monday afternoon found Schmidt's campaign still "Gone to lunch," with the previous letter untouched since Friday!

We added the second challenge to the growing pile on the door, and headed home.

"I would have as many debates as I could." That was local radio host Bill Cunningham's response today when a caller asked what he thought about his friend Jean Schmidt's refusal to debate with Victoria Wulsin.

The Cincinnati Enquirer feels the same way, and so do Dr. Vic's supporters. So when Ms. Schmidt held a high-dollar fundraiser at Cincinnati's Queen City Club two days after her campaign manager had said she only had time for one debate, she had some unexpected guests...

Schmidt Still Dodging Debates

"Gone to Lunch" read the sign on the door of Jean Schmidt's campaign office when Vic showed up today to deliver her second debate challenge.

Dr. Wulsin first asked Schmidt to debate three weeks ago, proposing an event in each of the Ohio 2nd's seven counties. Schmidt didn't respond��and when a Cincinnati Enquirer reporter tracked down her chief of staff to ask why, he disdainfully dismissed not only Vic but the voters of Ohio: "Who'd show up anyway?"

Vic showed up to Schmidt's office today, giving a press conference on the front steps before heading upstairs to deliver a second request. In her speech, she pointed out the dangers of Schmidt's silence:

Congresswoman Schmidt has yet to respond to my offer. Her campaign has told the Cincinnati Enquirer that she will only debate once, in Hamilton, for a Sunday morning news program...

My opponent��s campaign, apparently, thinks that Americans are uninterested. They believe that Americans prefer sound bites to substance; that Americans prefer 30-second ads to hour-long debates.

I believe Americans want something more. Today, more than ever, they need something more. Sound bites will not save lives in Iraq. 30 second ads will not heal Ohioans who can��t afford healthcare...

Congresswoman Schmidt, I promise that if you and I debate, Ohioans will come. Americans want to believe in government again. So let��s rise to the challenge.

We eagerly await Ms. Schmidt's response.
