So About That Senate Race... How Are They Doing?

Okay, feedback time here at BSB. Last weekend over 60% of you said you supported Brunner over Fisher, but the public narrative seems to be overwhelmingly the exact opposite. So what is she doing wrong? Money is obviously important, but it’s not everything. How does she wrestle control of the message back from the media that she is a serious contender in this race?

And Fisher by no means gets a free pass here. He’s got the money and the party establishment, but he can’t break away from Brunner in the polls. What gives him the right to claim front runner status when all his advantages haven’t had any impact so far on the one advantage (voter support) that actually counts?

So let’s hear it, what are the Senate candidates screwing up and what are they doing right?

There is no "public" narrative

to "wrestle control" of. This race is anyone's game at this point. There are people in the media trying to shape a "public" narrative, but they tend to ONLY focus on money and endorsements and haven't explained why this hasn't made Lee Fisher the breakway favorite in the polls. I don't think anyone is "screwing up" except maybe the newspapers by trying to impose their usual campaign nuts-and-bolts narrative at a time when people are desperately concerned about policies that affect their lives. Once the public is paying attention — after the holidays — maybe then it will mean something. But I guarantee few outside of poltical junkies are paying attention now.

Everyone Screws Up

It's the human condition.

And I don't think Brunner can wait around until the public takes notice, she needs to be laying some serious groundwork now. And I'm just not seeing it yet. Money isn't everything and she does have an opening, but it could be closed well before the electorate comes out of a coma.

Dem Side of US Senate Race

ytownboy3 urges JBRU supporters to drink a strong potion of truth syrum and quickly. As talented as she is, she does Ohio no good if she is relegated to the sidelines of public life. Make no mistake aboout it, that is where this program is heading. For reasons that we can debate later, her campaign for this seat has not caught fire. While she merits high praise for persistence and determination and certainly effort, the fact is she is playing herself out of public service and back to the business of law. Like it or not, some Dems are cool to her bid because she chose to give up an all important apportionment board seat as we head into a year in which elections to the offices of Governor, Auditor and Secretary of State will determine which party will draw legislative boundaries for 99 House and 33 Senate seats in the Ohio General Assembly. In your blind support for her candidacy, that important detail has escaped the well intentioned editorial writers at BSB (you appear dumbfounded that not everyone sees this matchup as you do). All one has to do is witness the train wreck that is the leadership of the GOP controlled Ohio Senate the past few weeks to understand what type of government Ohioans will receive if these neanderthals are rewarded with a third consecutive decade of control of the apportionment board. Sorry to break it to BSB, whose devotion to and advocacy for Jennifer Brunner would otherwise be commended, the condition of our state trumps one seat and one first year voice in the United States Senate. So you cannot blame those good Democrats who would be otherwise supportive of Brunner if she were running for re-election and our disappointed, if not resentful, that she is not. Put another way, ask yourself where can she make the greatest difference/have the greatest impact on the lives of Ohioans? In 2010, the answer is clear, by holding on to the office of Secretary of State. Seen in that light, the inability of her candidacy to catch fire should really come as no surprise to anyone capable of an honest appraisal of where this race now stands. For those of you non-believers in search of answers, I hope this tutorial helps.
