[UPDATED]: Paul Hackett is a hack, and it's time we acknowledge that

Nobody likes a good narrative better than me, but at somepoint the truth has to trump the legend (look out, Gov. Palin).

Paul Hackett is a darling of the DailyKos crowd and many Ohio progressive bloggers , even though politically, he's much more conservative that they are.  The sole reason for this is because of his performance in the low turnout special election in which he almost defeated Jean Schmidt to fill the remainder of Rob Portman's term.

The very next year, after flirting with running for the Senate instead of a rematch, Hackett dropped out of politics almost entirely.  The Democratic nominee, Dr. Victoria Wulsin, actually outperformed Hackett and came even closer to defeating Schmidt as an incumbent in a regular election than Hackett did in an open seat race during a low turnout special election.

Beyond that, he said that Sherrod Brown was too liberal to defeat Mike DeWine.  And was proven wrong.  He then endorsed Rosemary Palmer over the consensus challenger candidate to Dennis Kucinich.  Palmer performed worse than just about any other challenger.

Then Hackett decided this Spring that he had to denigrate Wulsin's chances this cycle.  As a result, I said on this blog that I was officially done with Hackett.

Now, emerging on DailyKos for more fauning, Hackett today decided to post some of the most gawd awful advice I've ever seen.  And almost all of it is a completely untrue characterization of Barack Obama's campaign in Ohio.

Here's a point by point rebuttal of Hackett's hack of a post:

The Obama campaign has no organized presence in Southern Ohio; southern Ohio defined as south of Interstate 70 which runs east west and loosely divides the state in half both geographically and culturally.  The Obama campaign’s focus of effort is evident in the traditionally Democratic strongholds of northeast Ohio, the Cleveland area and Mahoning Valley, in addition to Franklin County/Columbus in the center of the state.

In fact, Obama has six to seven campaign offices in SEO alone.  Far more than Obama has in NWO, and far more to the nonexistent presence Kerry had in 2004.

Obama himself just campaigned in the region in the past week.  Governor Ted Strickland has been barnstorming the region on behalf of Obama.  And the Governor of Tennessee has spent considerable time campaigning in the region.  In comparison, we got one picture of John Kerry goose hunting last cycle, and that was closer to the Youngstown region than rural Appalachia.

Hackett then goes on to suggest that Obama is taking a strategy to focus on pumping up GOTV efforts in Columbus and NEO and other urban areas to win.  That is not the strategy.

Then Hackett writes:

The only antidote for such an assault is a comprehensive and aggressive personal attack on the Republican ticket focusing on how the personal lives of Palin/McCain evidence their personal unreliability and therefore their lack of character and values to lead America coupled with an aggressive defense of the Democratic central theme of Change.

...

The message is simple and the professionals can refine it but essentially it should contain these elements:

"Sarah Palin?  Can't keep her solemn oath of devotion to her husband and had sex with his employee.  Sarah Palin? Accidentally got pregnant at age 43 and the tax payers of Alaska have to pay for the care of her disabled child.  Sarah Palin? Unable to teach her 16 year old daughter right from wrong and now another teenager is pregnant. Sarah Palin? Can you trust Sarah Palin and her values with America's future?  John McCain? Divorced from his first wife one month and marries a billionaire influence peddler and convicted felon.  John McCain, a record of rash and impulsive decisions.  That’s not change that’s more of the same.”

Like it or not the path to the White House requires paying the Ohio Toll, and traipsing around Columbus or Cleveland and preaching to the converted is no substitute, and for that matter nor is duck hunting with Governor Strickland;  See John Kerry, 2004.

First, you would think an outdoorsman would know the difference between a Canadian goose and a duck.  Second, this is just gawd awful advice.  Attack Palin over unreported claims that she had an affair?  Claim that the pregnancy of her last child was an accident?  Blame her as a parent for her child getting pregnant?

If the phoney "lipstick on the pig" caused faux outrage, this kind of sleazy personal attacks would generate genuine outrage.... against Obama.

Hackett's post is factually blind and tone deaf.  He simply doesn't know the basic facts about Obama's ground game in Ohio as he criticizes Obama for not doing exactly what he is doing.

It's time it was said.   Paul Hackett is a one-trick pony and will stay that way until he decides to do something to help out the cause instead of trying to steal some more of his fading limelight.

Maybe if Paul Hackett acknowledged he was wrong to criticize Victoria Wulsin this spring and was foolish to give Schmidt such partisan fodder.  Maybe if he started dialing for dollars and voters for Vic Wulsin.  Maybe if he went to the Obama campaign offices in Portsmouth, Chillicothe, Marietta, Nelsonville, or Marietta to volunteer or to boost the morale of those volunteers to keep up the fight.  Maybe if he campaigned for Obama and Wulsin in SEO with just a tenth of the intensity he did for himself.

Maybe then he could become the Paul Hackett that the DailyKos crowd believe him to be, and be the political figure I once thought he was.

[UPDATE 1:]  It's official... Paul Hackett hack status was officially declared by Ben Smith on Politico:

Hackett isn't a particularly central figure in Ohio Democratic politics these days, and I don't think the Obama campaign is likely to air the attack ad he suggests, which goes after Palin on the grounds of sex and motherhood.

It includes the line that Palin "accidentally got pregnant at age 43 and the tax payers of Alaska have to pay for the care of her disabled child." (And that's the most printable part.)

[UPDATE 2:]  Here's an Ohio Obama diary on DailyKos that's worth reading. (From a fellow Scioto County native, no less).

Thanks Modern

I saw this when it was on the rec list and was shocked at how naive, misguied and poorly thought-out much of it is. It also smelled of "hey, I'm still relevant! Seriously!"

Once upon a time, I had a lot of respect for Mr. Hackett and appreciated his fresh approach. I don't have much any longer - his advice is a recipe for disaster.

It's also worth noting that the comments on that diary are overwhelmingly negative and critical - no fawning at all in this case.

You're right

And not because you agree with me. :) But you were right about the comments. The majority were largely negative. And Hackett has yet to post a single reply anywhere to defend his comments.

However, there was a significant segment that supported Hackett and said that people should listen to him because he knows Ohio.

B.S.!  Just because Hackett almost won an open seat special election had nothing to do with him having his fingers on the political pulse of southern Ohio.  It was the result of the political barometer favoring Democrats and the fact that after a divisive primary, Schmidt was a flawed and injured candidate.

Just because he rode the wave well doesn't make him an oceanographer.

Hackett did an impressive campaign and did better than most people thought he would.  But he's no political strategist or pundit.  He had zero involvement in Democratic politics before his race, and he hasn't been as involved as he could have been or as I would have expected.

I was very pissed to read his comments about Wulsin in Roll Call.  Mostly because, I don't know who Hackett was referring to when he said "people" think if she couldn't win in 2006, she couldn't win now.  Second, Paul knew in making it in a D.C. political trade publication he was throw a piss soaked blanket on Wulsin's ability to fundraise while giving Schmidt fodder against Wulsin.  It was completely unnecessary.

In 2006, not many people gave Vic Wulsin much of a chance because she wasn't Paul Hackett.  She not only beat expectations; she did better than Paul.

I'd note that prior to today, Paul Hackett had not posted on DailyKos in over two and half years.

That's worth noting.

Oh,

And some people just simply cannot believe that Paul Hackett wrote it. They're convinced that some GOP prankster hacked into his DailyKos account. Seriously?

And a few facts are always good...

A story in the Cincinnati Business Courier about the local Obama ground operation http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2008/09/15/story2.html?b=1221451200^1698665

I was a supporter (and contributor) until...

I saw him in person.

First, he introduced himself (and I quote) as "an ambulance chasing lawyer" from "the richest zip code in Ohio." Really, that's what he said.

As he spoke, despite his genuine charisma, he was absolutely unable to articulate a coherent statement on any domestic policy issue without lapsing into the most simplistic slogan slinging. His lack of insight on education was glaring (one event was at UT, the other in BG.) utterly devoid of insight, balance or nuance.

But then it got worse...

What he had to say about immigration was FAR to right of any neo-con including Tancretin (Tandcredo.) I was sincerely and genuinely shocked. I considered asking his campaign to refund my (meager) contribution. I was flabbergasted.

I've glanced through his diatribe on the burnt orange bigblox and it reeks. But actually, that doesn't surprise me.

Here is one simple incontrovertible fact that demolishes everything he has to say: The Ohio Obama campaign has put more staffers into more towns SOONER than ANY previous campaign in Ohio history. They are coordinating with local organizations and campaigns a LOT more than the Kerry campaign.

He has shown to me that getting attention matters more to him than taking the time to grasp the facts. But, you're right, he IS very popular online, but that does not speak well of the denizens of the 'sphere.

OK fire up the flame machines, I'm going back under my desk...

Paul please visit...

any of the 3 Obama offices in Hamilton County, or to the Wulsin office and see what is really happening before you open your mouth. (Or your keyboard) No one has seen you lift a finger in any campaigns since your own. You have no idea what is happening...and it shows.

In the interest of fairness

My recollection is that he has participated, notably in the context of veterans' activist groups.

Yes he has lost my respect

I was a supporter of his back then as well. But his diary on kos today was the last straw. It was totally wrong, innacurate and uninformed.

Spot On, Modern.

I saw that on KOS and thought "WTF?"

Talk about misinformed.

Hackett obviously has no clue, and hasn't lifted a finger fo Obama except the middle one.

Obama has HQs all over Ohio.

His "advice" to rip Palin on the issues he cites is so ridiculous, one wonders whether he's really backing McSame.

And to think I actually wanted that jackass to run against Sherrod in the primary.

shame on me.

There's lots of public policy issues she can be attacked on~

The Republicans would like nothing more than to make this Presidential race about people's personalities and personal stories and other assorted shallow crapola~

This race is about the fact that our economy is crumbling and the impact this will have on all our lives and the future of our nation as we know it.

For any democrats to be dumb enough to take the bait and attack this woman on personal issues, no matter how tempting, would really doom our people to an uncertain future and deprive the world of the promise of the Enlightenment Ideals-- no joke, in my opionion that's what is at stake in these times~ Our nation's premise, the reason the rest of the world puts up with us, is because we're supposed to be something, or at least trying to be something, that the world needs and wants to exist.

I won't attack Hacket, he's entitled to his opinion, but his blog as represented here is illustrative of not-seeing-the-forest-for-the-trees~ he's missing the point and reflecting the Rovian philosophy of "whatever works, no matter what".

Look where that's gotten us! It's gotten us a capital city filled with nincompoops, syncophants, criminals, liars, war profiteers and cynics.

My advice? Attack McCain! He's very, very attackable!  To go after Palin or McCain for thier personal choices is to play into the narrative they so cling to-

It's the economy, stupid!

What do you think, JeanLR?

I'm torn between your comment about the economy being the central issue and Russo's analysis here

There is something very deep going on that I've never witnessed before.  Something nebulous.  I perceive a generalized anxiety resting above various issues, with the economy being central, and a deeper "consciousness" movement, with people being forced to choose their sides in the final volleys of the "culture wars."  At least this edition of said wars.
