Patrick Poole (& Ohio Rightwingers): Idiots or Racists?

In the good 'ole days of the 60's and 70's, Conservatives/Republicans were content to target African Americans with racist politics. However, sensing an opportunity to target more minorities in the wake of the attacks of 9/11, some conservative republicans have launched crusades against all practicing the Islamic faith (or in some cases merely being of middle eastern descent). Make no mistake, the Islamic Fundamentalist misinterpreting their holy work as a sermon of destruction must be dealt with, but Islam in itself is not the threat. The issue, like in any culture, is dealing with the extremists who choose to misinterpret their scripture as license to kill.

The hatred the rightwing holds for Arabs, and those practicing any form of the Islamic faith, always amazes me. I still have immensely emotional reactions to the events that occurred on September 11th, but I've never lumped the entire middle east into my rage against those that committed the atrocities against our country. However, in my opinion, some folks - like those at FrontPage Magazine - hear the word the Islam and immediately revert into fight or flight mode. Most recently, Patrick Poole - aided by the likes of RAB and Columbuser - lashed out at Abukar Arman and insinuated he was a terrorist (or aiding and abetting terrorists). Today in a comprehensive article, the Dispatch refuted all such claims:

For the past few weeks, Arman -- who served on the county's Criminal Justice Planning Board -- was under scrutiny by federal and local law enforcement.

"We did a background check and found no criminal or terrorist connections," said county Administrator Don L. Brown. "Mr. Arman is not a person of interest."

The problem here is that organizations like Poole's Frontpage Magazine (aided by Republican blogs) initiate and serve as echo chambers for these sorts of islamic witch hunts. A second problem is that County Commissioners like Paula Brooks takes them seriously:

Poole notes the county Web site says that the criminal justice board oversees homeland security. County officials said that is an error: The board oversees justice grants and court programs, and handles no sensitive information.

Two commissioners, Marilyn Brown and Mary Jo Kilroy, didn't respond to Poole. The third, Paula Brooks, sent an e-mail to Brown on July 12.

"Don, I expect this to be investigated expeditiously," Brooks wrote. "If true, these allegations are definitely grounds for removal."

Note to Paula Brooks and all other Democratic incumbents. DON'T RESPOND OFFICIALLY TO FRONTPAGE MAGAZINE. While you're at it, it's probably a bad idea to respond officially to any other blog or publication that has a history of setting attacking (which is why I don't put info requests into most GOPers, I don't expect them to be answered). Next time you do something this half-witted, expect to have liberals down your throats too - it's moronic.

Folks like Columbuser and Poole just don't know how to say "I'm sorry." They get the whiff of Islam and they go stark raving mad. As evidence from Columbuser's response today:

Democrats and the Franklin County Board of Commissioners are pumping the fact that a criminal background check on Abukar Arman “found no criminal or terrorist connections,” according to Franklin County Administrator Don L. Brown. This is somewhat besides the point, since Arman was not accused of any criminal activity, but rather of “praise for [US] designated terrorist organizations and individuals.” The accusations were made by Hilliard resident Patrick Poole, both on his blog and in the online FrontPage Magazine.

Here’s the Dispatch’s article on the “clearing” of Arman and here’s Patrick Poole’s response. Patrick is a bit kinder to the Dispatch than I would be. The article ignores the fact that the Democratic/county response is completely off-point.

Point blank, the county response was appropriate. They noted there was no terrorist connection. Anyone that tells you otherwise is letting their own bias get in the way of the facts. Also, these folks should be admonished for trying to tie terrorism to Democrats, even after the individual in question is cleared. Columbuser makes a nice try of this with his headline "Franklin County Democratys 'clear' HAMAS supporter," and RAB previously tried to use the issue against Mayor Coleman. The issue for these folks is that they think Abukar inappropriately praised Islamic organizations they don't approve of. I don't have too much to weigh in on that issue, however, I would note that the investigation found that Abukar broke no law. However:

Arman counters that even U.S. government officials now are talking with the Islamic Courts Union, which, despite its harsh fundamentalist rule, did stop lawlessness for a time in Somalia. He says that his writings simply point out that Al-Qaradawi is viewed by many Muslims as a moderate.

Also, Frontpage magazine, RAB, Columbuser, and others owe Abukar Arman an apology for discrediting his reputation. However, I won't be holding my breath too long on that one.

Point of Info, Mr. Admin...

Paula Brooks did NOT respond officially to FrontPage Mag --nor unofficially. She received constituent inquiries and MSM inquiries (radio station and Dispatch) about Mr. Arman serving on the county board related to federal spending for public safety programs.

A public official can't ignore that kind of request in the post-911 atmosphere and Brooks did NOT publicly call for an investigation.  She asked the County Administrator in an inter-office email to look into it.  That email was FOI'ed by the wingnuts and the MSM, dragging Brooks into the rightie blogosphere so they could beat their breasts and say she responded to THEM.     Poole said in his writings that Brooks responded to his article, but that is simply not the case.    Mr. Admin, don't buy into that self-serving garbage  and give Patrick Poole the recognition he craves by BSB browbeating Brooks.

Now here's the scoop for BSB -- Mr. Arman was first appointed to a county board in 1999 by an all-Republican commission (Stokes, Shoemaker, Teater).  He has served ably in several public positions since then.  You won't find those two facts on FrontPage or RAB -- nor even the Dispatch story today.  Otherwise the Dispatch story was complete and pretty balanced.

Paula Brooks

The Dispatch article, along with other accounts I've heard, have stated that Brooks replied to FrontPage Magazine. If that's the case, my point stands. FrontPage Magazine, along with RAB and plenty others, are pointed opinion sources who are openly hostile to democrats. I don't care whether we're pre-9/11, post, or in fantasy land...when you know someone is going to bash you there's no point in giving them ammo. Kilroy and Brown handled this appropriately by ignoring FrontPage's request...if Brooks was replying to Frontpage, she needs to rethink that policy in the future.

It's NOT the case...

....And your point does not stand.  Brooks did not "reply" or "respond" to FrontPage -- directly or indirectly. You fell for the Dispatch distortion / spin that Kilroy and Brown "ignored" or "did not respond" to FrontPage.

However the county's July 12 email trail --obtained under FOI by the Dispatch and others --shows clearly that all three commissioners and several county staff reacted swiftly that day to the phony "terrorism" issue raised by the loons at FrontPage. That's what government officials have to do -- whether bloggers (left and right) and political spin artists like it or not.

It started early the morning of July 12 with a Patrick Poole contacting County Public Affairs Director Hanna Greer and Homeland Security Director Kathy Crandall before 8 a.m.-- asking them for info on who recommended Mr. Armand's appointment. After passing Poole's FrontPage email and article to Columbus police, Crandall recommends in an 11:29 a.m. email  to all three commissioners that they hold an executive session of the commission for "providing a Terrorism Early Warning (TEW) briefing on the subject."  Five minutes later at 11:34 am., Commissioner Marilyn Brown replies to Commissioners Mary Jo Kilroy, Paula Brooks, Administrator Don Brown and  Greer that "this is very important to do as soon as we can arrange it."  At the urging of Crandall and Kilroy, Greer sends an email at 4:37 p.m. setting up  the TEW briefing for a commission executive session for July 23.

Two minutes later at 4:39 p.m. on July l2, Brooks dictates her email from the out-of-state asking Administrator Don Brown to "investigate."   Brooks was traveling that day  and was not aware of all the action among staff and other commissioners in reaction to the Front Page article. But that Brooks email is what the wingnuts seized on -- without knowing of the TEW executive session.

It's all in the email trail given to the Dispatch (and others) under FOI.  Somehow the Dispatch reporter failed to read the trail -- or got spun by somebody. Clearly, the three commissioners and staff together started the "investigative" ball rolling on July l2.  And none directly replied or responded to FrontPage. Ultimately, the commission held its exec session for "personnel" on July 24 and the later result was Mr. Armand's resignation on a citizenship technicality.

It's all there in county email for the price of an FOI request.

Paula Responded to an Email from a Citizen of Columbus

I know the person who first sent the email to Paula. They are a citizen of Columbus. They are not from Frontpage magazine. I urge you (o' wearer of blinds) to take Abukar Arman up on his challenge to "read his articles". Just take the freakin time to be a google monkey for a couple hours and read his stuff. He's compared the United States as being just as much a terror organization as al-Qaida, has endorsed terror groups hamas, hizbullah and also other violent muslims worldwide. Keep your politics in your ass. Just read what he endorses.

Paula Brooks

My question is how did Frontpage and RAB get wind of Ms. Brooks email for the issue to arise? Who put them on this trail? Seems like people with axes to grind or opposed to Ms. Brooks political stands are trying to set her up. Any commissioner diligently carrying out their duty can not simply ignore derogatory information about one of their appointees. She has a duty to request that it be investigated in as unobtrustive manner as possible, so as not to needlessly impugn someone's reputation. To do otherwise set the commissioner up for criticism should the allegations prove true.

Answer to Anony's good Qs...

Somebody leaked it-- either a staffer or a constituent.

And then somebody calling herself "Lisa from the County" later posted on RAB that commission minutes of March, 2005, showed Brooks made the motion to recommend Armand for the appointment even tho Paula claimed she didn't know him.  Actually, she didn't. Her motion was procedural for a 3-person commission.  Republican Dewey Stokes seconded and Kilroy also "ayed."

Armand had been first appointed to a county board in 1999 by Stokes and two other GOP commissioners, but partisan wingnuts missed or ignored this.

Paula

Come on Blue Dog, does Paula's truth stretching rub off? I simple look shows that you are spinning this to try to make Pula look good. An email dated July 12 that was printed on "Front Page Magazine" from Paula's aid says: Commissioner Brooks asked that I share this with you. She did not recommend Mr. Arman, and Commissioner Brooks especially relied on the judgment of the other voting commissioners: Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy and former Commissioner Dewey Stokes – both of whom she thought knew Mr. Arman." RJ and Paula DID sent Front Page the info. That was a day before Brown, Kilroy, or Greer said anything. On the 13th they responded to a request form 610 WTVN, and said that the Board does not oversee Homeland security. "The Franklin County Criminal Justice Planning Board meets quarterly to review annual grant applications for funding from the Justice Assistance Grant Program, Violence Against Women Act, Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention II and Juvenile Accountability Block Grant from a diverse pool of applicants. The Criminal Justice Planning Board does not oversee homeland security for Franklin County. Those functions belong to police and fire, the Sheriff’s office and the FBI. Any information about homeland security presented to the Board is also available publicly." Also contrary to your spin, "Lisa from the County" posted "Paula is a Liar" on Front Page, but the report showing Paula nominating Mr. Arman was part of the Front Page story, NOT something Lisa put on there. The only known communications between Front Page and the County was from Paula's aide RJ Sontag, who specifically said "Commissioner Brooks asked me to share this with you."

Nice try, Crooked Spin... er Stream

But your statement is false on its face. Period.  Neither Brooks nor her aide sent that Don Brown email to the Front Page or Poole.  That's why I answered Anony's Q above by saying it was "leaked" to Poole by either a county staffer (with email access) or a constituent. RJ Sontag did not respond to the Front Page. He knows better. His email went to contituents whom he addressed as "you" -- not Poole. He didn't share anything with Poole. In your rush to blast Brooks for "responding a day before Brown, Kilroy or Greer said anything,"... you ignore the entire FOI'ed email trail above. Email exchanges clearly show all four of them -- and the Homeland Security officials at city and county -- were reacting carefully and responsibly all day on July 12, exchanging info as they set up a July 23 TEW executive session.  Greer replied appropriately (as is her job) to WTVN on July 23.  That's the only thing you got right. As for your friend, "Lisa from the county"... she tried to pin the Armand "recommendation" on Brooks through a procedural motion in 2005 when actually the first appointment he got from the county was in 1999 from Stokes/Shoemaker/Teater.  That's the point the wingnuts missed or ignored.Your Crooked stream of non-consciousness makes you sound like a Preisse/Pryce/Stokes tool -- still pining for a "bloody Dem Primary" for congress. Get over it.  Progressive bloggers need to refocus their fire on Pryce -- not Paula -- if Dems want to win a congressional seat and keep the county commission in 2008.

I have know idea....

....who "Lisa from the County" is or was. Front Page that had the minutes from 2005. I can only assume that it was from a FOI request. If RJ's email that was on Front Page was not sent to them, it sure appeared there quickly and before anyone else had responded to any of the accusations. It was RJ's rush to pin it on Kilroy and Stokes that started this whole thing. As for "leaking", it is you who is leaking the internal emails, not I....see above.

Give it up, Crookie

Last sentence of last comment is senseless. Nobody said you were leaking anything. RJ replied, as directed, only to constituent inquiries by email. The county email trail is public reccord under FOI by Dispatch. Unfortunately, Dispatch (and anti-Paula bloggers) spun it wrong in the face of facts about July 12 listed above from the same email documents.

Real tragedy is that sincere people like Mr. Jamal Afrah (below) believe your false attacks on Brooks when he writes:  "We were also suprised Commissioner Paula Brooks to respond officially to blog or Patrick Poole rather than conducting this matter professionally and privately."  (underlines added).  All the county officials handled the matter professionally -- if you read and understand the email trail instead of reading the wingnuts and axe-bloggers.

No....not "know"

oops

Patrick Poole: Racist or Anti-Muslim

Abukar Arman is very well-respected in Somali-American Community here in Columbus and he has been living here ever before Somali immigrants arrived in Columbus,Ohio. Helping and extending his assistance to many Somali-Americans here in Columbus has been one of his passion. We were suprised to read Columbus Dispatch's article and how the so called FrontPage and Patrick Poole bashing one of our own brightest image and taking his articles out of context. We were also suprised Commissioner Paula Brooks to respond officially to blog or Patrick Poole rather than conducting this matter professionally and privately. Columbus Dispatch's article below mentioned couple very interesting points that attracted our attention about character of Patrick Poole whose name is no stranger to our community http://www.dispatch.com/dispatch/content/local_news/stories/2007/08/06/arman.ART_ART_08-06-07_A1_IB7HNVM.html First point in Dispatch mentioned: "Patrick Poole said he's not anti-Muslim; he lived with a Muslim family while working in Albania." It is a double standard for Patrick Poole to say one thing but practice different. Patrick Poole's article in his blog http://patrickpoole.blogspot.com/2005/11/french-intifada.html responding to French youth who were complaining lack of jobs and opportunity he wrote his article of French Intifida Qoute "They can't ask French: how do we handle the enormous Islamic immigrant community, most of which deny to anyone else the rights that current French law affords them? To even consider limiting their privileges or expelling them would be considered fascist" Second point in Dispatch mentioned: "Poole, who moved back to Hilliard in 2005, said he was stunned at a decade's worth of changes in his hometown" Same article http://patrickpoole.blogspot.com/2005/11/french-intifada.html Patrick poole wrote Qoute: "Another question French can't ask: what will be the long-term results of the population boom amongst the immigrants, but the zero-population growth (and worse) amongst the native French? To ask the question looks racist. The answer, of course, is a simple matter of demographics" Therefore, it is very clear Patrick Poole's record speaks itself and his hidden intentions against Muslims, Immigrants and Minority. Jamal Afrah Columbus, Ohio

What is going on here?

Has the author of this article or anyone posting here actually read the articles from the "Looney" front page? Not one of the articles accused Abukar Arman of any criminal acts or terrorists ties. They all simply pointed out actual quotes from him that were clearly sympathetic to known terrorists and terrorist groups and that he was on a board that oversees homeland security in Ohio. It always amazes me how some people can let their politics on both sides blind them to common sense. Apparently the people here would have no problem with a cub scout leader or school teacher that frequently posts on the nambla website as long as he has never been convicted or caught acting on his desires. Amazing.

NAMBLA

Hmmm...interesting invocation of NAMBLA. I only know one group of people that use that reference in politics.

Super crazy conservatives.

Look, Poole's upset with writings in praise of Islam or anything similar. Tell ya' what, before you come back clawing at me like crazy, do me one favor. Compile a list of all the Middle-Easterners and folks of Islamic faith that Poole and his supporters like. Then we'll talk.

Abukar Arman

Abukar Arman is a foreign national. Under no circumstances should a foreign national be sitting on a commission that, according to the Franklin County website oversees Homeland Security in Franklin County. There appears to be a competence problem in the Franklin County government.

Mr. Arman's writings praise Hamas. Hamas has been designated by the United States government as a terrorist organization. Regardless of whether Mr. Arman in fact has terrorist leanings, I do not want any supporter of a designated terrorist organization on a commission that oversees homeland security in the county, even if he were a citizen.
