AG Race Turns Bitter

Marc Dann unloaded a steaming pile of vitriol on the pages of the Youngstown Vindicator

YOUNGSTOWN -- State Sen. Marc Dann said people like his opponent in the Democratic primary for attorney general, Subodh Chandra, "are a dime a dozen."

During a Thursday interview with The Vindicator, Dann of Liberty, D-32nd, said Chandra, of Cleveland, doesn't have the experience or the leadership qualities to be a good attorney general.

I think Marc Dan just buckled under the pressure with this ridiculous statement. If Marc Dann honestly thinks People like Subodh Chandra are a dime a dozen then he has incredibly poor judgement when it comes to talent and he has no place getting anywhere near the AG's office where he is going to have to hire the very best folks to staff that office. Chandra responded

Chandra responded, saying Dann's statements are ridiculous.

"What I hear is a desperate attempt from a candidate," he said. "I've got more experience than this three-year state senator who's gotten nothing done. He fills an important need in our state, handling divorces and fender-benders. But that is no basis to be elected attorney general."

I guess the gloves are coming off.

I thought it was rather atypical this morning when Subodh was respondig to a question about why he should be the nominee with the first snide remarks I have heard him make about Dann, saying something to the effect that he has never been reprimanded or sued for his role in a case.

Big story coming Monday...
...my impression was even stronger than previously that Dann is not all that excited about running for this job. He's articulate and intelligent but he doesn't seem to have the drive, the fire, the intensity that Sobodh does.

Whatever happens, can we just be sure not to make it easier for Montgomery, please?
if you want to make it harder for betty clueless.
people like Subodh *were* a dime a dozen!  Lord knows we could use them all.
I was at the event yesterday and I was a bit shocked by what I heard.
I was expecting to hear a stump speech, followed by a debate over the
issues ? but instead Subodh opened with a smear of his opponent, a guy
whom I happen to like.  My analysis of the situation? Subodh's
positive campaign has him down fourteen points and so now he's gone
negative.  No shame in that (I guess) but now he's gone really
negative, hacking at a great candidate and refusing to support his
fellow Dem in the general election.  This disappoints me?  a lot.

Apologies to Yale Law grads, but Marc Dann's coments hardly qualify as
the initial salvo in a negative campaign.  Anyone who's been following
the race knows that Dann has largely ignored Chandra.  He seems to
respond only in joint events and only after Subodh unloads on him for
a half hour.  Again, let's not be fools here.  Dann made the exact
same comment in the MTB interview the other week ? in response to yet
another Subodh attack.

I think Subodh's new dirty campaign style is a very bad move, both for
his campaign and his future.  I'd like Subodh to stick around in
politics.  But what I saw from him at the event yesterday really
bothered me.  Is this the real Subodh?  If the above post is to be
believed, Subodh will now unleash yet another smear against Dann, a
candidate whose qualifications have been acknowledged by his
colleagues, the party and the media (for example, the PD endorsed
Subodh today- but called both good and talented candidates).  Even
ignoring his obvious credentials, Dann's been extremely friendly to
the blogosphere.  That doesn't earn him our blind loyalty- but how
about a little respect for the guy who's been taking it to Bob Taft,
Tom Noe, and the Republicans for the past year.

My advice?  Staking out an extremist position such as refusing to
support the winner in the general is a nonstarter, with me and with a
lot of other democrats.  When individuals put themselves above the
cause, that's when I walk.  I'm worried that Subodh's smears are going
to end any chance he has of ever holding statewide office in Ohio.  So
I'll close with this plea.  Stay out of the gutter, Subodh!
what's your position with the Dann campaign ? been reigstered for all of a couple of hours and your first comment is to spout BS in response to Dann's record.

Dann may have ignored Chandra in public, but behind the scenes him and the ODP have been working overdrive doing everything they can to keep groups from voting to endorse for AG, because if they did they'd vote for Chandra.

I hate these public saints who are backroom shitkickers. You want to play rough, play rough. Don't start using anonymous surrogates wringing hands about what victims they are and can’t we all get along. Waaaaaaaa!!! He attacked my record, wwaaaaa. He talked about my resume, waaaaahhhh! BULLSHIT.  You want to play, let’s play.

Chandra didn’t smear Dann… he told the truth. Just like the many times he gave Dann credit for his work on coin gate. The fact that you avoid addressing what Chandra says and instead play the blanket victim card means you’ve got nothing. Address the points or shut up.

What did Chandra say, and how was it wrong? Why is Dann just as qualified as Chandra to be AG? I’d love to hear you make that case.

NO ONE has laid a clearer vision for fixing Ohio's mess that Subodh Chandra. NO ONE has a better resume for following through on his vision. Chandra has backed up EVERYTHING he's talked about with past actions that equal REAL RESULTS. Prove me wrong. Show me why Dann is better.

amounted to about 15 seconds out of an overall presentation (and were in response to a question about why to vote for him over his opponent), out of about ten minutes of of presentation about what he would do as AG. He literally devoted ONE sentence to Dann and then didn't refer to him again. In the half a dozen times I've seen Chandra, he's hardly mentioned Dann, let alone "smeared" him. Personally, I can't remember ANY references to Dann, although there may have been one here and there. Cloud, your POST seems to constitute a smear. What on earth does "apologies to Yale grads" even mean, except to be a gratuitious smear? You REALLY think saying people like Subdoh are a "dime a dozen" ISN'T an "initial salvo in a negative campaign"? Subodh's support comes from his strong, positive and very clear message about what he will do once elected and his clear enthusiasm for the job. Many of us like Dann, but he seems not to have the fire that Subodh does. Your post just made Dann a little bit less appealing. Lesson one: please don't lie on behalf of whoever you support. It's just SO Republican.
