The Gov Debate - My Thoughts
I listened to the Gov debate between Flannery and Strickland earlier today. First a few perfunctories. Well done to the MTB crew. I thought it was well done indeed.
Second a thanks to Bryan and Ted for participating. Especially Ted. He really had little to gain and more to lose than Bryan if we are honest yet he showed up and did it. That earns him some bonus points in my political play book.
to the debate itself. I thought Bryan was doing well for the first 20 minutes or so and on top of the subject matter, while I thought Ted labored a little with a few too many talking points and generalities. If I had stopped listening at that point I would have come away with the wrong impression.
Flannery was trying very hard to draw distinctions and find areas of disagreements as I think he has too, but at one point I think he tried so hard he might have ended up disagreeing with himself a little on education.
After about 20 minutes Ted seemed to get into his stride and showed some depth to the questions he was asked. Especially on energy and mental healthcare. I was in fact quite impressed and learned some stuff I didn't know.
I don't expect candidates to have a perfect grasp of every issue, and I have to be honest I was worried about Ted not having much depth on any issues, but listening to him laid those fears to rest I think.
Bryan also showed some depth, but I did get frustrated with him talking about his "plans" but not really hearing any detail about what these plans are. After listening to 80 minutes of debate I shouldnt then have to go research plans too. that is above and beyond civic duty for most people.
I did balk only once, and it was to Bryan's answer on abortion and specifically when asked if he would sign a bill akin to the SD bill, where he answered "probably not". Before I would cast a vote for someone I would need a lot more certainty on this issue that's for sure. I want to know if women are going to be disabled in the hospital while doctors watch on helplessly as they deliver a rapists baby.
you can listen to it yourself here if you haven;t already done so.
