Dude, your Dell exploded !

Wow.

At a conference in Japan, a Dell laptop suddenly exploded into flames, and lucky for its owner the fiery blast occurred while the PC was sitting on a table and not in his lap. An onlooker reported that the notebook continued to burn, producing several more explosions over the course of about five minutes.

The model of the offending Dell notebook wasn't mentioned, but since it was of the Windows persuasion, we can now boast that we are unbiased in our reports of fiery laptops, both Mac and PC. It's only a matter of time before something like this happens on an airplane.

Back when I still had a job that, well ... paid, I had something similar happen. For a while before stumbling back to my home state to do this politics thing, I was the head of IT for a software company out in San Francisco. One day, I'm sitting in my office and I here this loud "pop" noise. Everyone's looking at me - either because of my habit of pounding on my desk when something worked - or even more likely because right outside my office, on one of my staffer's desks, there was a fire. The battery in his laptop (which was charging at the time) had literally exploded, and there were flames shooting out of it. By this time, everyone in the immediate area, and in the loft up above (this was the dot com era, people) is staring down at it, watching the fire, and more little explosions. I finally had to tell someone to call the damned fire department, 'cuz everyone was completely entranced by the fire. The lesson? Don't buy crappy aftermarket batteries - and if something catches on freakin fire - call the damned fire department. Oh, and take pictures 'cuz it's freaking cool
