McCain aide's dream in '04: a Kerry-McCain ticket....
Goodbye, John McCain. Senator John Kerry came out today and said that not only was a top McCain aide approaching the Democratic Senate Caucus about McCain potentionally switching parties, but also approached the John Kerry campaign about having Senator McCain run on the Kerry ticket.
You can read the story and listen to the radio interview of Sen. Kerry on MyDD.
If McCain doesn't address the growing whisper campaign that McCain was considering not only switching parties, but also running on the Democratic presidential ticket as recently as 2004, he's toast.
McCain, of course, will simply say that it's a loose cannon aide who approached the Democrats. He did publicly support the President in the 2004 election, but was that after Kerry took a pass?

I think this is the first time in the past ten years that Kerry has said something that benefits the our party, or at least hurts a Republican without killing us. He should get a sticker or something.
While some are questioning the timing of this, I think it's perfect. McCain is already bleeding from his poor fundraising efforts last quarter and this is another punch that hits him in the base. His opponents will paint him as a self-server who only cares about obtaining power by any means possible. If Hagel announces, he's toast. I don't see anyone liking the "maverick" who not only abandones the party, but supports their most unpopular stance.
The time is also good in the sense that this needs to be well known and well documented well before the primaries so it is an understood to anyone voting. Even if he does get the nom, it's going to be old news to voters who still won't undeerstand why the hell he supports Bush's Iraq escalation.
It's a shame Kerry didn't pick McCain, all they would have to do is make signs that said Douche and Doucher.
