Just Got Off The Phone With Boccieri's Office

David Potts - Posted on 18 March 2010

I just talked to Jessica Kershaw, Congressman John Boccieri’s press secretary, about the upcoming healthcare vote.

If there was one key point to the call, it’s that they still claim to be undecided and will remain that way until they see the final bill (which they hope comes this afternoon).

Beyond that, it was mostly spin.

When asked about the CBO analysis released this morning, all she would say is that John was encouraged by it.When pressed to name key issues that they were looking for in the bill, I was told they were looking for a bill that cut down on “waste, fraud, and abuse” while strengthening Medicare and Medicaid.

Despite asking repeatedly, I couldn’t even get an answer on whether Boccieri would be willing to pass the Senate bill if he felt an adequate fix was waiting. I was only told that they wouldn’t deal with hypothetical situations.

Finally, I asked her to compare the situation now to the situation before the first vote. I was told that it was largely the same. I followed up by asking if the CBO analysis hadn’t made any impact, given that most of his previous issues with the bill were financial. Once again, I was told only that Boccieri was encouraged by it.

One question I did feel that I got a straight answer to? The amount of contacts the office has been receiving on this. I was told that the office received over 3,350 calls, letters, and emails yesterday alone.

I have e-mailed John Boccieri on three occasions to ask him to vote yes on the health care bill. His response to my first went somthing like this: There are many concerns that must be worked out. He is working hard for his constituents concerning this health care plan. Second response was that the current bill does not do enough to contain cost. In my last e-mail,I asked him to tell me , yes or no if he is going to vote for this bill. The following is the his response: Dear Mr. Siladi, Thank you for contacting me regarding health care reform. I have sought the input of constituents, small business owners, and health care professionals during this debate. The input I received from you and others gives me valuable insight into the challenges patients, doctors, and hospitals face every day in our health care system. I believe all Americans should have access to quality affordable health care coverage that can be carried from job to job and prohibits insurers from denying coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. We should place more emphasis on eliminating inefficiencies in our current system. Our health care system should focus on disease prevention and wellness programs to fight chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. Like you, I strongly believe the United States should not provide health insurance for illegal immigrants and that our current Medicare programs must be strengthened and protected for our seniors. The bottom line is health care reform must allow patients and physicians to work together to determine the best care for the patient. I will make my decision whether to support the reform measures before us in the U.S. House after reading the final bill in its entirety and weighing it against the concerns, criticisms and ideas that I've gathered over the past year. Please visit my website www.boccieri.house.gov for more information. I encourage you to take time and read it with me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. Sincerely, John Boccieri Member of Congress (As you can see, I get spin and no answer to my question. I'm willing to bet he will vote NO, even if the CBO says that it will cut the deficit) This man is a republican in disguise).
