Jennifer Brunner Begins Series Of Women's Forums

Last night in Marietta, Senate Candidate Jennifer Brunner kicked off a series of “Women’s Forums” that will be held all over the state.

It’s a really interesting concept that she’s having events as a candidate, yet not shoving the campaign in people’s faces. The event I went to last night had the same feel as many of important school board meetings or issue panels I’ve been to over the years. The focus on real issues rather than speeches was a refreshing change.

And while gender equality was the core issue of the night, it wasn’t the only thing discussed. Audience members branched off into all sorts of issues facing the country such as the economy and healthcare and how they fit into the overall topic of the forum.

I was a little disappointed, however, in my own gender. Despite being an open invitation event, just three men showed up. That includes myself and Jennifer’s driver. I know the President was on TV, but surely the speech wasn’t that riveting.

Below is the full list of upcoming forum’s. You might want to consider attending one near you.

I also talked to Jennifer a bit after the event and she seemed very upbeat and confident in her run for Senate. I think she’s fully aware of the challenges she faces, yet is still very much committed to seeing this thing to the end.

I Just Don't Get It Girls

Let's get this off on the right foot here. I am a boy. My dad was a boy as well. So are my sons Shawn and Brandon. My sisters, mother and daughters are all girls. Always have been. And we are all Democrats. And I for one remain DEEPLY OFFENDED by the politics of division which these gender based movements are creating. We are all in this together on planet earth. The economy is in a shambles because of the stupid policies of Congress; we are on the verge of entering into a new era of war in Afghanistan; global warming has all but been forgotten on the national level; and there is NO MASS TRANSIT WHATSOEVER IN OHIO. And now, my friend Jennifer, has decided to create an issue where there is none. Let's get all the girls in a room and talk. Nonsense. And they wonder why no boys...other than drivers and writers of course...attended? Please. Oh, and good timing. A Democratic girl's club meeting while the President of the United States is delivering a nationally televised speech. Subliminal message: Choose between him and US.  Let me ask one question.  Do you think for a moment any man, be he Bill Clinton or Lee Fisher, would dare to issue an EXCLUSIONARY invitation to the "men of Ohio"?   Why not?    Bill O'Neill

Open Invite Event

Bill, the event was open to both men and women. There was no exclusion at all. The fact is, men just didn't show up.

"And now, my friend Jennifer, has decided to create an issue where there is none."

Does that mean you would've voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act?

No It Just Means I Don't Feel Welcome at "Women's Forums"

Please understand, Jennifer is my friend, and I am proud to call her my Secretary of State.  She has brought a breath of fresh air to that stale office.   But I disagree with throwing that office to the wolves, and I definitely disagree with the politics of division which is implied by a "women's forum" or a "men's forum" or a "gay forum" or a "latino forum".  It is the politics of division.  We are all democrats, and we need to treat each other with respect if we expect the world to join us and support our causes.  Bill

Women's Forums

Bill, your fundamental mistake is assuming that all Democrats have the same position on every issue and that they place the same emphasis on those issues that you do.  There is a difference between dividing people and recognizing that there are unique challenges that are presented to an individual, both personally and politically, by being born a female, a latino, or a homosexual.  By acknowledging these challenges and hoping to fix them, the goal is to create a society which is LESS divided and MORE fair.  While it might not be important to you that women make less money than men, or that homosexuals might face discrimination, or Latinos might encounter both discrimination AND pay equity, I assure you that it is very important to the people facing these challenges.

I am so disappointed in this post

I can't believe you of all people called it nonsense.  I met you during the '06 campaign and had great respect for you.  You were one of the few along with Jennifer and Sherrod that I felt very strongly about as candidates.

I applaud Jennifer Brunner's campaign on this.  She is talking about substantive issues rather than simply having stump speeches.  She is doing good even if she doesn't win.  I love the campaign that she is running.  And... let's get this straight she is absolutely NOT neglecting any of the issues that you mention.  Have you read her posts and e-mails?  She is focused on all of it while at the same time continuing her job of excellence as Ohio's Secretary of State.

It is not nonsense and it is absolutely not the politics of division.  It is absolutely the politics of inclusion.  The issues that Jennifer is addressing are issues that affect mostly women, child care, health care, elder care, etc.  We do want to talk about them.  We like to have our voices heard and we appreciate a forum that recognizes the difficulties that we face while trying to balance work and home.  This is important stuff to us.

I suspect you are an exception to the rule (you have the most impressive resume of any man I know) and not like most husbands that don't know when the next "well baby check up" is scheduled or what shots your kids need and if the Pediatrician can provide it or if you have to go to the health department.  If the babysitter is sick... what are you going to do?  Do you have enough sick/vacation time left to handle all of this from your job that you are not paid the same as your male counter part?

You're probably also not like most brothers that are glad they have a sister to take care of aging parents or a sister to handle Thanksgiving or remember gifts and cards to Grandma or make food, watch kids or order flowers for sick or bereaved relatives.  This is the world I and most other women live in.  We take care of that "stuff".

As a fellow Democrat, I am disappointed that a fellow Dem would belittle such a forum.  It is absolutely not the Dem platform, I am sure.  As I recall, the last local Democratic Women's club event had as the key note speaker... Peggy Fisher.. who applauded such an event.  I also know that ODP reps have said time and again, "when women vote, Democrats win".  And.. just for the record... Lee Fisher does have a strategy in his campaign that might make you unhappy... it is called "Women for Fisher" or "Women for Lee".  I know.  I was called by a recruiter.  I doubt he has a "Men for Fisher" button.

So, I am very sorry, but I respectfully disagree very strongly with your message.  I think you are wrong on this.  Not only in the Fisher vs. Brunner arena.. but also in the larger Democratic Party efforts arena.

Reaction to Latest

ytownboy3 states that it is only because of the respect he has for Jennifer Brunner that makes it a sad spectacle to watch her play herself out of public service, something for which she is otherwise suited. While BSB projects that her ascendency to the world's greatest deliberative body, if it were to happen, would solve the Nation's and Ohio's many ills, ytownboy submits that the higher calling would be to retain the apportionment board seat that she was pledged to hold for the sake of Ohio and Ohioans. Her decision to place her own personal interests ahead of her party's and her state's likely consigns the state to a third successive decade of outdated GOP rule of the Ohio General Assembly. Whether your infatuation with her is her spledid personality or her toughness, her candidacy has not moved the dial. Some resent her willingness to cast the apportionment board aside like a lap dog. It shows in her fundraising and the enthusiasm for her race. What a waste of a great public servant. Oh well, it was her choice, a bad one that sets us back..........if Mary Boyle deserved the blame in 1998, JBRU gets to wear the goat horns next year.

The mistake some Dems make

is thinking that we always need to be on Defense rather than Offense.  JBRU sees this and this is why she is running for Senate.   She is the best candidate for that job.  We need a true progressive in that seat.  The SOS is an important seat for sure - but it is an administrative one.  She did a fantastic job and will be an even more fantastic Senator once she is elected.

If the Dem party cannot find a capable SOS candidate, that is not the fault of JBRU - that is the fault of the Dem party in Ohio.  We should not have to play Defense in that seat - we should always be on Offense.  We want to progress.  Not cower in fear that we will lose a race and sacrifice our best possible Senator because we are so damned scared of the apportionment board.  We have a good candidate for Auditor, a candidate for SOS...  why do you think we cannot win the apportionment board?

I'm tired of the mealy mouthed, cower in fear, we gotta play Defense mindset of some on the left.  If you haven't noticed, Jen is a fighter - she isn't playing the game of cower and fear.  She is taking the Progressive message on the road and working to move our State and Country in the right direction.  If we can't win the apportionment board that is on the plate of Chris and Ted.  Not Jen.  She is doing exactly what she should for us.

Reaction to/Request of Nicole Vision of the World

ytownboy3 gives a fine tip of the cap to Nicole for her "let's play offense and not cower" pitch in her post of early 12/5. Nicole, would you please be willing to list the ingrediants of the cocktail you were consuming when you posted your blog? It might actually help with the pain I am feeling as I size up how far Ohio will sink after a third consecutive decade of misguided GOP priorities that appears evident as JBRU, ever a fighter, wages her own thoughtful if increasingly desperate campaign that seems destined to return to her private law practice. I admire your convictions Nicole and maybe I have been rendered too cynical after witnessing the first two decades of Repub governance and where it has led this state and that brings out an instinct to place practicality over blind optimism. Maybe I have watched too much Tressell ball and have grown accustomed to how his defensive strategy, while unexciting, wins many ball games for the Bucks. You are willing to let Jen off the hook for losing the apportionment board and are all too willing to assign blame to the Gov and state chair. While I am not happy with those crazy guys either (for other reasons), on my scorecard they will not be to blame for how the Dems surrendered the apportionment board after one elections cycle. Anyone with an ounce of knowledge of the impact of the apportionment board in ultimately shaping the policies that impact the lives of ordinary Ohioans knows we are doomed if Husted, who would handily lose to JenBird, beats some unknown candidate from an unknown part of Washington County (with no friends and no record) for the critical tie breaker seat on the board. So long as you are willing to share the ingredients of that cocktail so it will numb the pain Ohio is surely to suffer, I will find a way to appreciate that Jen was thinking more long term as to how she could help Ohioans with one voice, one strong voice out of 100 in the increasingly useless, albeit prestigious US SENATE. (Sorry if I appear to be cowering at the thought of the next ten years around here.) Ohio will be in the toilet but hey, let's acknowledge this, Jen meant well!! Let's get the ball back and start on offense......

Some facts for your bold claims?

Ytownboy, for what reasons do you call Jennifer Brunner's campaign "increasingly desperate"? She polls FAR better amongst independents and about the same amongst democrats. You can place as much emphasis on money as you (or whichever Lee Fisher supporter you get your opinions from) want, but elections come down to the will of the people. And while Fisher is doing...seemingly nothing, Brunner is holding events throughout the state, building support and momentum. I would hardly call hers a desperate campaign. I am not excited about the candidacy of Jennifer Garrison, but I like her chances. The issues that I disagree with Garrison on, gay rights and (maybe?) abortion, she will have very little control or influence over in her role as SOS. And her more conservative stances, and the fact that she's got the same rural background as Strickland, will help her perform strongly amongst moderates and even some conservatives. And it bears repeating: you can't blame Brunner if Garrison or the ODP can't run a successful campaign.
