If Hillary Loses Ohio, It's On To Senate Majority Leader

This is a rumor. Repeat. This is a rumor.

Spoke with a few of my friends in D.C. today and they told me the nasty rumor that popped up in the beltway political circles the last day or so. The claim floating around DuPont is that a deal has been struck should Obama sweep both Ohio and Texas, Hillary will step aside for the good of the party. In return, Harry Reid will find a cabinet position in an Obama administration and Hillary will be elected Majority Leader by her greatful peers.

Sure, it's far fetched. But it is entirely unbelievable? Nope, not by a long shot. Howard Dean and others in the party leadership have stated repeatedly that a brokered convention is undesirable, and that a deal should be struck to avoid such an outcome. You better believe that a deal to scuttle a once viable presidential campaign is going to have to be pretty loaded. These same party leaders have expressed a willingness to help avoid a brokered convention.

A deal of this nature is also more believable because of what it's execution requires. The rumor is Hillary would have to lose both Ohio & Texas to trigger it. Currently Clinton is expected to win both states, and a loss in those two states involves hundreds of delegates, and a sign that something would be very wrong with the Clinton campaign. It'd be apocalyptic. Even if there were no deal in place, Clinton would face dim prospects after Ohio and Texas losses. A deal ahead of time doesn't change that situation, it just assures some finality and stability should the two losses come.

So once again. This is just a rumor, but an interesting one at that.

doubt

I certainly enjoy a good rumor, but I just don't see Hillary giving up that easy.  I see her biting/scratching/clawing until the bitter end.

I believe it

Based on an article in today's New York Times, which quotes a Clinton pledged delegate as saying that if Clinton doesn't win big in Ohio and Texas, then she's out. It would take a pretty sizable win here for her to catch up in the delegate count. According to MSNBC, after being swept out of the Potomac Primaries tonight, she would need to win 56% of all remaining available delegates to pass Obama. Finally, I think some democrats are pissed at Harry Reid, especially after the senate caved on FISA today.

You Wish

Rumors? You base all this on rumors? Man, looks like you all have Hillary's life all planned out for her. Wow. Did you call her and tell her yet? lol I don't put much weight in the caucuses. They don't reflect how the majority of Democrats might vote. Many regularly voting democrats cannot even attend a caucus because of the "one day, one time" feature because of their work schedules and demands of family, epecially working poor, or single parents, and shift-workers. The caucuses end up leaving out the very people who need to have a voice in the process. How fair is that? I think the candidate who wins the larger states through popular vote is the stronger candidate. And right now, that hasn't been Barack Obama. Is there a special post waiting for him?

Stronger Candidate?

The problem seems to comes down to this: A large number of independant white males prefer Mcain to Hillary. Obama however, polls several points higher than Mcain in a head to head.  Throw in the fact that Nader has indicated that he may run if Hillary is the nominee  and she makes for a very shaky contender. I am sure Hillary or Obama would be an enormous improvement, but democrats need to realize where the rest of the country stands after the primary.  We can't afford to shoot ourselves in the foot again.

White Independant Males Will Decide And Don't Forget About Nader

It's not about the battle...

After The Primaries are all over we will be left with this simple fact: Critical number of independant white males prefer Mcain to Hillary, leaving her in a losing position in national polls.  Obama, however, consistently polls several points higher than Mcain.

Throw in the fact that Nader indicated to Amy Goodman that he is considering running if Hillary is the nominee and she becomes a real liability as our contender.

Nearly all Democrats would agree Hillary or Obama would be an enormous improvement, but we need to fully appreciate, that the rest of the country will ultimatley be the "deciders". We can't afford to shoot ourselves in the foot again.

Apparently California got the memo too late, straw polls there are now favoring Obama.
