Dem Yard Signs Vandalized -- How Should We Respond?

Lucie - Posted on 16 October 2006

A Worthington resident whose yard has good visibility, says he has had his signs for Dean Hernandez and Mary Jo Kilroy ripped up repeatedly. This is the first report of this that I have heard here in Worthington. Are other people having this problem? Should he make a police report? I know there were pretty fierce sign wars in Upper Arlington during the Kerry campaign -- the incident that sticks in my mind was that a Republican official (I think he worked for the city of Dublin) directed his fourteen year old child to take a sign out of a Democrat's yard. She had carefully obeyed all laws on where and how political signs can be placed, and caught them doing it. She did not prosecute because she didn't want to do that to the child -- but she, and most of us, were horrified that the father set such a poor, mean-spirited, undemocratic example. Is this just a sign of frustration? Weakness? Incipient Rovian behavior?!

Yes, by all means, report it to the cops. You might encourage your colleague to also include a NO TRESPASSING sign in the yard. Vandalism and Trespass, however, do not truly need a sign to be enforceable. Also, encourage your friend to take photos of the signs and the later damage. BTW, it sounds like Karl Rove's dirty tactics. Whoever's doing it needs a criminal record.

Anyone who stoops to doing the yard sign game is obviously desperate.

Anyone.

During the 04 campaign I lived in a community that split 50-50 between Kerry and Boosh on election day. I was a Kerry volunteer and distributed yard signs. Many of those signs disappeared across the community on a single night, including mine. I went to the police station the following day and a cop simply shrugged and said, "We've gotten the same complaints about (Boosh) signs disappearing." It's all part of the game. I guess the worst thing about the experience is a feeling of violation -- having someone unknown trespassing on your property and doing as they will. In the future they just better hope I don't catch them.

It was a Dem, and a lawyer at that, who got his child to do the dirty work.
Stick a cheap webcam out there, with some luck you could post the results and prove your point.
do it. just aim for their feet.
New report -- as of 8:15, someone reportrd two Democratic candidate's signs taken out of two yards on Evening Street (4 in all) -- they saw a car pulling out of the driveway and called the police. I have not heard of any Republican signs being taken! Hmmm.

signs, just come down to ODP. My father got his Strickland sign stolen in Reynoldsburg too, and he is ticked off.

and people are reporting the thefts to the police. Some think it is a concerted effort -- guess we may have to take more evening strolls around here, which might be a good idea anyway. Sad when the other side resorts to stifling free speech by stealth!

That's what some people are planning to do! I asked if a particular candidate was targeted more often, but that doesn't seem to be the case. There was a theft of a set of Republican signs as well as the Democratic ones in the most targeted area, so we think it was just a Saturday night prank.
