It's very short, but it will make you feel something unless you're a psychopath! The thought of the sensation he felt in this very controlled situation is enough, I cannot imagine, as he states, what it must be like for someone who may even be unable to tell anything to make the tormentors stop~ it is diabolical really.

When I think of vanity fair, i don't think of the magazine. I work with the company that sells ladies clothes from time to time, so the name here didn't make me thing of the mags. Also, it seems like they would put the "real" date in the article since it's going out via the web ahead of the magazine date. My apologies. Now I still don't see how the mag can predict the future.. :)

Here is the most chilling way I can find of stating the matter. Until recently, “waterboarding” was something that Americans did to other Americans. It was inflicted, and endured, by those members of the Special Forces who underwent the advanced form of training known as sere (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape). In these harsh exercises, brave men and women were introduced to the sorts of barbarism that they might expect to meet at the hands of a lawless foe who disregarded the Geneva Conventions. But it was something that Americans were being trained to resist, not to inflict.

Exploring this narrow but deep distinction, on a gorgeous day last May I found myself deep in the hill country of western North Carolina, preparing to be surprised by a team of extremely hardened veterans who had confronted their country’s enemies in highly arduous terrain all over the world. They knew about everything from unarmed combat to enhanced interrogation and, in exchange for anonymity, were going to show me as nearly as possible what real waterboarding might be like....

It goes without saying that I knew I could stop the process at any time, and that when it was all over I would be released into happy daylight rather than returned to a darkened cell. But it’s been well said that cowards die many times before their deaths, and it was difficult for me to completely forget the clause in the contract of indemnification that I had signed. This document (written by one who knew) stated revealingly:

“Water boarding” is a potentially dangerous activity in which the participant can receive serious and permanent (physical, emotional and psychological) injuries and even death, including injuries and death due to the respiratory and neurological systems of the body.

As the agreement went on to say, there would be safeguards provided “during the ‘water boarding’ process, however, these measures may fail and even if they work properly they may not prevent Hitchens from experiencing serious injury or death.”....

I would love to see Cuyahoga County Treasurer Jim Rokakis appointed State Treasurer. He is a first class public servant, smart and active. I wish more people were listening four and five years ago when he was warning everyone that predetory lending practices combined with loose sub-prime mortgage lending practices would lead to a pandemic of foreclosures. He took over the Cuyahoga County Treasurer's office after it was rocked by the SAFE collapse and turned it into the model of tax collection and cash managment. He has been voted County Executive of the Year and has been given performance awards by several national publications and associations. He would be an excellent State Treasurer.

Looking at the faces of our statewide elected office holders, my gut (and experience) tells me the Governor/party will appoint a minority to fill the position. There are some great minority elected officials that would serve well and be an asset to party. I hope they can actually recruit one, perhaps Mayor Coleman??? Mayor Mallory?? If not, I hope they dont appoint an unimpressive Barbara Sykes type candidate to merely fill the role like Token on South Park. We need someone that can hold the seat upon reelection.

All things being equal, I would love to see my County Treasurer, Jim Rokakis, as the next Ohio State Treasurer.

What planet are you on? Hasn't he been shunned by his own party since the whole "my wife gets no bid federal contracts" scandal? EVERYONE should take a HARD look at this race. Her money is good, her numbers just keep getting better and better, and her opponent is facing serious ethics problems! And what is this with "it's conservative district?" Clearly, you haven't kept up with the voter registration numbers...Take a look and reconsider. This district went for Obama and it will go for Jane!

She has a tough race -- while Strickland carried that district in 2006, it's a very conservative district. Strickland won the district, in large part, because Blackwell had very little appeal in that area of the state, and because he had represented part of that district while in Congress.

Unfortunately, Turner isn't as vunerable as some other Republicans in Ohio, so this would be a very tough spot for the Democrats to pick up.

OH-3 is an increasingly democratic region and Mitakides has a good campaign with focuses on the environment and creating jobs for OH-3. With the Moraine GM plant closing, jobs are more and more important to the people of OH-3.
