Democratic nominee Bill O'Neill today blasted Steve LaTourette's "cowardly inaction" in voting "present" on the Iraq war supplemental funding bill in the House of Representatives today.

SOUTH RUSSELL, Ohio (May 15, 2008) - Democratic candidate for Congress Bill O'Neill, who earned a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam and whose son served America in Afghanistan and Iraq, blasted Rep. Steve LaTourette for voting "present" on an emergency supplemental funding bill for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"At a time when Americans should be applauding the bravery of our troops, we deserve far more than cowardly inaction from our congressman," O'Neill said. "Say what you will about all the many and varied positions Steve LaTourette has taken on this war, but at least he took a side, even if it was often the wrong one.

"This refusal to take a stand shows just how much Washington really has changed him in the last 14 years. Our troops putting their lives on the line for this country and the people of Northeast Ohio deserve an up or down vote, sir."

The "present" vote was part of a tactic engineered by Minority Leader Boehner to vote down this bill. Why?

Because it contains extra money for veterans' benefits and an extension of unemployment benefits!

MY GOD! Anything but that!!! God forbid we should take care of our veterans!

And an extension of unemployment benefits has been sorely needed for years. Our current system was designed under a model where factories closed for a time, then re-opened. But that's not happening anymore. Factories are closing and never re-opening, because their work has been shipped overseas. People who are laid off often have to retrain for a new career. That takes longer than six months.

But God forbid we should help our workers in a struggling economy! Way to Go, Stevey-boy!!!!
