Confused

Sunglasses, this is a common confusion around the Apportionment Board. The Board draws the district lines for State House and State Senate seats. There's no approval from the General Assembly, their word pretty much goes.

However, drawing Congressional district lines is NOT done by the apportionment board, but rather by the General Assembly.

The Apportionment board ONLY does the State House and State Senate lines. The Congressional districts are drawn in an ordinary bill passed through the state house and senate and signed by the Governor.

Apportionment Board

If they convened today, we'd have a 3-2 majority. Husted will take a shot at Brunner in 2010 to try to switch the balance back in the hands of the R's. Assuming at least one of the two (Brunner and Fern) win their race, we will maintain the majority (I am of the opinion that no one the R's bring can handle Strickland).

Can someone confirm, though, that once the lines are re-drawn, the measure must be passed by the General Assembly? If so, the D's will not be able to do much, as the R's will be in control of the Senate for the forseeable future.

Wow - okay well I apologize - I really thought that had to be an April Fools or something!!! I still can't imagine an ego like that taking a thankless job like Auditor, but you guys know better than I...

But - Be Honest - Redfern would still make a great tour guide for the Rock & Roll Hall of fame!!!

I've overheard a few local party leaders speculate about Redfern running for Auditor. They seemed to think it was likely.
actually the auditor scenario

is very plausible for the fern. i've heard it several times from several different people. the auditor sits on the apportionment board which we need to control in order to redraw the state leg districts. i wouldn't be surprised to see him make that move at all.

Lisa the districts will be re-drawn in 2011 and won't be in effect until the 2012 general.
Are you serious???

I was only half serious about Redfern as a C-man; but I can't even fathom him running for something as stupid and pointless as a state Auditor!!! I'm assuming you are kidding - but it brings up a point - what are we going to do with Mr. Redfern once he's done as the ODP chair... I'm thinking that we could get him a big Chief Wahoo hat and give him a job as mascot for the Indians... Or he'd make a great Brutus Buckeye... Labron James could use a chauffer... Maybe a local cable access talk show... I'll have to give it some thoughts - anyone else have any good ideas?

When does the reapportionment board redraw the districts in 2010

because that changes the ballgame completely. Does that occur after the '10 general?

Chris Redfern has no interest in being a small fish in a big pond like Washington, DC. He will be running for Auditor in 2010, not Congress.

might be the last time Ron Malone was relevant in Ohio politics. Chris Redfern is not running for Senate in 2010. Neither is Lee Fisher. Redfern is not a viable candidate and Fisher wants to be governor, not Senator.

in 2010 Redfern is going to push for Marcy Kaptur to run for Senate, he'll pull all the strings so she is either not challenged or if she is that she wins the nomination ... Then Chris Redfern can run and win her congressional seat...

If all of the following happens, my two good working kidneys will both be yours:

1) Ryan runs for Senate

2) Redface runs for Senate

3) Redface gets more than 30% of the vote in the primary

4) some old lady doesn't smack Redface in his red face for being so smarmy

The Fern will stop Ryan in his tracks. Lee Fisher is Ron Malones water boy. Ron, Ted and Hilary's team still picks the ticket and control the party.

Are you Ray Miller?

Probably not. Because not even Ray Miller can honestly believe he's got a chance of being the Senate nominee in two years. He'll be lucky to still be the Senate Minority Leader by the end of the year...

In his short tenure as Senate Minority Leader (a position he took in a power play coup claiming he would be better situated to help the Democrats gain seats in the State Senate this cycle), he has been one embarassing headline after another and has raised zero money for the caucus.

That's not hyperbole. The man raised nothing for the caucus since becoming Minority Leader.

How anyone with his record of campaign finance violations and hubris coming home to roost thinks he has a snowball's chance in hell of getting the Democratic Senate nomination in '10 over Lt. Governor Lee Fisher or Congressman Tim Ryan is nothing more than delusions of grandeur.

[UPDATED] Tim Ryan for Senate '10?

Consider this one of the stories we almost missed last week:

Nothing says "I'm exploring a run for the U.S. Senate" like attending rubber chicken dinners on the other side of the State from your district.

So on April 19th, Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Youngstown) is going to be the keynote speaker at the Clermont County Democratic Party's dinner. Ryan was one of several being recruited to run in 2006, but instead supported Paul Hackett over Sherrod Brown. His support for Hackett alone should give Ryan a jump in SWO.

Ryan has, of course, gotten quite a national following given some of the most fiery speeches on the floor of Congress against the war in Iraq.

(HT: Cincinnati Enquirer's Politics Extra Blog)

Ryan has a good base in NEO. His prior support for Paul Hackett should help him make inroads in SWO and SEO as he improves his name recognition. Ryan has the ability to unite old Democratic constituencies like labor and new groups like young, urban progressives.

I've heard Lee Fisher as a possible candidate, too. Any other names in the running? [UPDATE]: A commenter mentioned Senate Minority Leader Ray Miller. Let me clarify my question about who else is in the running- I meant people who actually have a chance of getting the nomination. At this point, Ray Miller will be doing well just to finish the year as Senate Minority Leader.
