isn't on my usual reading list (I prefer Joseph Campbell and National Geographic), but I do read things like that even Bill Buckley and Francis Fukayama have said publically that the War was a mistake and that they were wrong. Many former Bush administration officials have said so, and have complained about Bush's many other policy outrages too. So have well-known retired and active duty military are with the American People in opposing this fiasco in Iraq and the coming wider planned conflicts. One is a founding member of Delta Force, Eric Hanley~ hardly a "softie".

What I've said about war, profit and that war is indeed welcomed by some, is simply a fact~ any honest analysis of history shows that again and again.

I don't have to read Chomsky, I have eyes and ears and experience.

"most americans" are not committed extreme pacifists, nor do they believe there's a vast military industrial complex scheming to raise oil profits via war, nor do they believe we are gunning for Iran at the profiteers' insistence.

especially swing voters in Ohio.

i can understand the impulse to scratch that itch with Cindy Sheehan, but it is a vote loser, especially in Ohio.

i'm not buying into any "smear campaign", if you read this blog or any of my other stuff, you know i reject this world view, and really hope Democrats move away from it at full gallop every chance they get.

The problem democrats have faced is that they treat people as if they are stupid. Instead of presenting the American People with thoughtful dialogue and reasoning, they have pandered and condescended.

They are building permanant bases in Iraq. The "Neocons" and thier fellow travellers desire to be at war with Iran. Like during the 80's, they will play all sides to ensure continued chaos and destruction~ very freeing for other nefarious activites abroad and at home, and very profitable as well.

Let's not forget oil, a product that, since the War began, has risen in price considerably providing quite the nice little bump in earnings for certain entities. Maybe the oil part of the equation can be understood better if we frame it as a motive~ not to provide us with cheap oil but to reduce supply to charge more for oil.

By fearing the criticism of Cindy Sheehan in a republican smear campaign to impugne democrats' willingness to protect US interests, you are buying what they're selling. Most people are not.

So it begs the question: how did the war in Afghanistan defeat Al Queda? where is Al Queda? who is Al Queda? Did we win yet? These questions are hard to answer becaue they defy the typical "war" frame. This has and always will be more about police-type action than military type action...even the military will tell you this.

It is tough to bomb an ideology.

I think it an oversimplification to state unequivocally that our having some responsibility for the blowback is "simply wrong".

I would also argue that extreme pacifism in the face of Al Queda is not only absurd, but necessary.

"painting Democrats as softies" has been a failure, as a huge majority of the country has come around to opposing the war SINCE Cindy Sheehan dragged it kicking and screaming into the public eye. As for Sherrod losing, I wouldn't blame Connie. The failure is all Sherrod's.

She has sacrificed, which is something B/C doesn't understand because they don't have anything to risk. They should have their children enlist, but they proably would never see a day in Iraq.
I agree she has suffered the greatest a parent could, I sure know I don't want to outlive my children. Or seen them off on a crusade, based upon fality information, because group think had occured.

Afghanistan was a righteous fight, Iraq was not.

Sheehan has served a purpose, but let's not make her out to be more than she is.

She's good at calling attention to the high cost of the war, but I don't really see her a any kind of "leader."

Tim enjoys demeaning Connie Schultz and has switched to Cindy Sheehan. Honestly, I do not understand his hostility.

It was Cindy Sheehan who sat outside the Crawford ranch and gave W a reality check inside his bubble. Cindy Sheehan has dedicated herself to a cause larger than herself, and like many before her has taken a lot of crap for it, unselfishly.

We need MORE people like her standing up for principle over crass political calculations. She is an excellent example of a citizen patriot, and I am grateful for her persistence.

Great coverage by Pho. What Pho says needs to be said. Extreme pacifism in the face of Al Queda is an absurdity. I feel genuine sadness for Cindy's loss, but she strikes me as someone who's used her son's death to thrust herself into a spotlight she appears to have craved her entire life, which is even more sad. Someone should help her out, get her a timeshare on a beach somewhere so she can get over herself.
