Ultra-Orthodox relatives

Had a phone, but they live in Jerusalem and I was in a town about 35-40 mins away. I honestly can't remember exactly how I learned about their distress but yeah, they were quite unhappy with me. But again, it might be very hard for people to imagine this but the West Bank was completely open and peaceful then. No one had any fear. The flow through the borders was dramatically different then from what it is now.

For example, I watched news yesterday that showed a reporter in the Old City, talking about and filming the Stations of the Cross. And she kept saying how crowded it was. It was NOT crowded. I walked the Stations of the Cross with a friend of mine, French Catholic, who was visiting me for a few weeks. He'd gone to Catholic school all his life, traveled a lot and wanted to see Israel (we also went to Egypt and he went on to Jordan).

Now when we did the Stations, you could not move on your own. You could only move as the footsteps of the rest of the throng of people moved - it was literally wall to Old City wall of people from side to side and in front and behind you.

The reporters can tell you it looks crowded to them, but you need someone in there who can tell you that compared to previous Good Fridays over the years? It was not crowded - and that shouldn't surprise anyone.

Me, an Uzi, Israeli kids and the West Bank

I sent my parents a picture of that when I lived in Israel in 84-85. With no note or letter or anything but the picture. And they had no access to me by phone. :) That was pretty cruel of me. The Uzi? Was the chaperone's - for every x number of schoolkids going on field trips, you had to have a guard. He had to go to the bathroom and asked me to hold the thing.

I want your kids. My son would probably be the one standing there with a video game controller screaming "keep it down" while he stared at the screen.

What's a parent to do?

Though I don't know what's in my son's facebook profile, its more likely you'll find a picture of him protesting against Neo-Nazis at a rally on his school's campus and writing about developing sustainable agriculture in third world countries.

Hope so, anyway.

Sincere Open Letter to Matthew Naugle

Matt,

During the 2006 campaign I researched your facebook account, formatted it into a .pdf, and forwarded it to the folks at BSB. Why? Because you were a target, and an arm of the Blackwell campaign charged with official duties of disseminating a campaign communication message to get your boss elected. Our job was to tarnish your credibility, and with your help, we did that well.

Today, as Jill has pointed out, you made a personal attack against an elected's child. As far as I know, that child is not currently serving any official role in a governmental office (not that an attack here would be justified either), nor is that child working on a campaign. Your submission is spiteful and in poor taste - and I'm sure that once again this will only lower third parties' impression and esteem of your site and your work. Matt, we're all working toward what we believe in, and it is difficult at times to find the line of acceptable and unacceptable attacks. I'm pretty sure that you know you've crossed that line with this post.

I have information, facebook account screen shots, and pictures of many folks related to electeds across the state. Some of this information has been forwarded to me, some I have found on my own. Just yesterday an anonymous tipster sent me photos of the Brinkman daughters from an online social site. I do not run this filth because it transcends the bounds of good taste. Plenty of my actions can be questioned from my flippant posts, to use of shampoo to make a point, to recently my public submission of Bob Bennett's phone number for angry citizens to voice their concern. Regardless of whether you agree with these methods and my estimation of where "the line" is at, I hope you still realize that all of these attacks are on elected officials or those who serve prominent roles in their elections. Your attack has crossed my estimation of "the line" and the bounds of what I think most folks would recognize as good taste.

This is a call to you to reconsider your post and withdraw your pictures and commentary regarding Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner's son.

All the best,
Jerid Kurtz
