he hasn't really pandered to the radical right wing of his party, either. he's actually a very likeable guy.

the only unknown w/ him is what opposition research might dig up. he was appointed to his senate seat (straight from serving as a lobbyist for bank one). since then, he's never faced a REAL challenger. so, i'm not sure how well he would acclimate to a tough campaign or how many skeletons the dccc might find in his closet.

and i agree re: husted. if anything, i think husted has his eyes on statewide office in ohio.

Husted is much easier to beat

than Stivers. Especially if the potential Dems are 20+ years established in west side communities as Paula and MJ are. He's a carpetbagger and there is a whole hell of a lot more dirt to dig up about him and his years in the Ohio House leadership. I personally think he is much too conservative for the 15th.

Stivers on the other hand is a veteran (he might even still be on active reserve...i'm not sure about that one). He is much more established in western Franklin County and he's a known moderate. I actually like the guy a lot, so I hope it's not him running. I'd hate to have to get nasty with him.

Don't Rule out Husted

I know everyone has him pegged for a statewide run...but I'm watching him for this seat too. He may be from Kettering, but he'll be well established in the Columbus region after 8 years in the statehouse.

i would be surprised if pryce runs again. she is out of leadership, 06 was bruising, and rumor has it she didn't even want to run then.

as for possible R candidates, i think the immediate frontrunner if pryce stays out is state senator steve stivers. unfortunately, he would be tough (but not impossible) to beat.

i.e. is she doing any? will she be doing any in the near future considering she now has one unofficial and one official opponent? it could give us an indicator on whether she is gearing up for a fight or is going to back down in '08. when is the next filing deadline anyways?

Running for Congress...

Running for Congress isn't something you should decide to do on a whim in January of any given even year. You should decide in the odd year prior to the election at the latest.

Why you ask?

Simple running for congress is expensive, you need to establish your self in your community, you need to figure out your stances on issues - all issues - not just crazy off the wall ones that are causing you to run, and so on. I can't tell you all of my secrets I still need someone to pay me for them.

So you start early so you can figure all of this stuff out. You don’t want to have your staff trying to figure it out for you in said even year. You look weak, indecisive, unsure, and mostly like an idiot who doesn't deserve the electorate's vote. Your heart can be in serving. You want to make a change. But serving in political office takes more than just putting your name on the ballot. And it usually takes more than one run to win an election.

But what do I know...

...you had your chance and came up short.

That said, I have a serious problem with announcing candidacies for an office within months after starting the term of a different one. It's obvious at this point that your heart's not wherever you're serving.

Looks like we are going to have a primary battle. This should make for some fun down at the county commission.

Dispatch confirms BSB's awesomeness

Well, that's not the headline, but it damn well should be. Today, the Dispatch confirms Jerid's Wednesday post re: the race for the 15th Congressional District.

According to the Dispatch, "We could have a primary," Brooks acknowledged. Brooks apparently courted the DCCC on her recent swing through Washington.

Kilroy officially announced her rematch bid yesterday. Her first fundraising letter went out Tuesday. She seemed a little, um, testy when asked about Brooks.

In an interview yesterday, Kilroy said her rival is Pryce, not Brooks.

"Paula hasn’t talked to me," the two-term commissioner said. "She hasn’t officially announced. ... My focus is beating Deborah Pryce."

p.s., Jerid is definitely right about the behind-the-scenes wrangling on this one.
