It would be such a coup if you're right!

In your dreams

We nearly aspirated our Frosted Flakes this morning when we read what one of our progressive blogging friends had posted just before 2 a.m. Saturday: that conservative Republican Ken Blackwell is dropping out of the governor's race.

But on the off chance that the unbelievable might actually be true, we called Blackwell's people, who are on duty today but were unaware of the latest buzz surrounding their candidate. By the time spokesman Carlo LoParo stopped laughing, it was clear that Blackwell is more likely to become a flaming liberal than a gubernatorial dropout.

LoParo went on to compare -- a bit harshly, we thought -- the blogger in question to those unfortunate people who get regular messages from alien civilizations.

"I guess all that tinfoil has paid off," LoParo said.

-- Mark Naymik
What would be his motivation to steal?

In 2004, he helped get Bush elected. But whywould the party give him a big reward for getting Petro and some of the other state candidates elected? DeWine won't need his help.

Dunno about "Halleluia!!!"

Ol' Ken is one scary, wacko dude, but it does sound like he is trailing Strickland by more than Petro. I'd really hate to see the R's keep the statehouse just because Petro is less of a nut than Blackwell.

Blackwell may also have more time on his hands to steal the election for the R's if he's not running. :-)

I doubt it would be polling

The party has been pressuring him to get out for a while because all polling to date has shown he'd be weaker in the general election than Petro. And Blackwell's arrogant response is that they should tell Petro to leave since HE, Blackwell, is going to win the primary.

I'd bet on legal trouble. I mean, we've seen he's just as much on the take as Petro, he's posted peoples' social security numbers on his site and refused to take down, the IRS has warned that it's going to be watching nad cracking down on churches and nonprofits (are you listening, Ohio Restoration Project?) that campaign openly for candidates. In the welter of Republican corruption, with all the pay-to-play, no-bid contracts, kickbacks and so on, trouble could be coming from a lot of places. Isn't Arshinoff deeply involved with Blackwell? That man LOOKS like trouble!

Fascinating

That tells me that he has some serious trouble coming his way from somewhere. He wouldn't just drop out of the race for nothing.

What was the last bit of polling that has been out there on a Strickland-Petro matchup?
