I am intelligent. In fact, I am a trial lawyer. (I know. Some would say that's a contradiction in terms.) I was indeed worried about this ad. That is, until I found out it's just not true. I think intelligent people, who really listen to and watch ads, question things. I will absolutely vote for Brown. I must admit, however, this ad made me question things for a little while. We MUST get the word out that this just isn't true. Even the conservative Cincinnati Enquirer, which has been doing fact checking on ads, pointed out the inaccuracy of this. I think there are many people who don't read anything. They watch TV, all the time. They will get suckered by this ad.

Who watches?

So who watches these ads.
Lots of people. Keep telling yourself: 50% of the population has below-average intelligence. There are folks out there with no more iniative than a weather vane, and they are eligible to vote too. If a negative ad can leave a voter with negative impression that lasts into the voting booth, then the negative ad was a win. If there are intelligent people who say "that's an insulting ad", there are not-so-intelligent people who say "I didn't know that!" That's also why apologies and retractions aren't very effective. Make the negative hit in the morning and set the impression, then the retraction in the afternoon doesn't undo the morning's work.

Its the little things

I buy the newspaper, cigs, coffee, etc about every morning from a little convience store at the end of my street. I went up there early this morning and they had 10 Ken Blackwell signs. I thought that was odd considering I live in a precinct with a dpi in the mid 70's.

I told the manager that I was taki ng my business elsewhere from now on. He told me that some guy asked if he could put them up and he let him. I explained how many votes we (D's) get out of the neighborhood and that he was going to offend more people than just me...........he promptly took them down.

Attack ad

So who watches these ads. We only see them because there are people who want to make running for office to expensive for a normal American.
I think we should require the Stations to run these ads as a public service. Then you'll see how few we'll be forced to watch.
Let's see you each have ten spots and we will review each of them for truth and the facts stated. If we find faults you will be billed for the spots. Would that change things.

It's time to make threats

Anyone else remember when "Deboarah" PRyce got some stations to yank a MoveO.org ad that said she got "caught red-handed" because, well, the wording could be misconstrued as meaning she had actual blood on her hands? It's time for the Democrats to start calling these stations that air these ads as well as the candidates and groups that pay for them and threaten them. these should be yanked off the air, along with the ones from Greg "My Daddy knows Dick Cheney" Hartmann, claiming Jennifer Brunner let a rapist go.

This is funny

Republican Mike DeWine and the RNC are airing an attack ad - attacking Brown for DeWine's screw up.

Expect fireworks this afternoon as Sherrod Brown's campaign for U.S. Senate blasts the Republican National Committee and Sen. Mike DeWine's reelection committee and demands that they immediately take down commercials with demonstrably false claims.

This goes to the new claim that Brown failed to pay $1,700 in unemployment taxes for 13 years. Brown thought something was wrong about that claim, checked it out through staff and learned today that he had in fact paid the debt in 1994. The state of Ohio -- where DeWine was lieutenant governor at the time -- screwed up matters and never released the lien until last year, according to the Brown campaign and records it unearthed.

That's pretty sad and pathetic.

I'd also like to admonish the Openers reporter, Steve Koff. He musta missed the memo where reporters aren't allowed to discern the truth, only present both sides - "demonstrably false claims" falls well outside the bounds if you ask me.

Anyhow, back to the story. The ad features this poor little lamb - Audrae Broyles

Poor Audrae looks like she got bamboozled by and spoon fed BS by DeWine

Script of the ad:

AUDRAE BROYLES: I've known Mike DeWine for over 30 years.

BERNIE POWERS: He's one of the most decent men I've ever met.
PHYLLIS NICKOSON: Sherrod Brown, your lies about Mike DeWine disgust me.

BERNIE POWERS: Not only did you raise taxes on social security.

H.R. 2264, CQ Vote #199, H.R. 2264, CQ Vote #406 (1993, 103rd Congress)

AUDRAE BROYLES: You didn't pay your outstanding tax bill for 12 years.

PHYLLIS NICKOSON: You didn't even show up to vote on the Older Americans Act.

Congressional Record, October 25, 2000, H.R. 782, CQ Vote #547

AUDRAE BROYLES: Sherrod Brown, I just don't trust you.

MIKE DEWINE: I'm Mike DeWine and I approve this message.

I think Audrae has placed her trust in the wrong man if you ask me. Quite embarrassing.
