Bob Bennett needs a room with a Vu
It’s kinda-sorta old news that Michael Vu, the embattled executive director of the Cuyahoga Co BoE was fired this week. But what about Ohio GOP Chair and Cuyahoga County BoE chair Bob Bennett? As noted in the MSM write-ups, Vu’s tenure included the tough transfer from punch-card to electronic ballots. But it also included the following –
…the mishandled recount of President Bush's narrow 2004 win in Ohio that gave him a second term… a botched primary last May and … the convictions last month of two workers who rigged the presidential recount so they could avoid a more thorough review of the ballots.
Fair enough. Should have been fired after the “mishandled” recount in 2004.
Here’s what I don’t get, though. Why in the hell would Democrats stand by while the Chair of the Ohio GOP also chairs the Cuyahoga County BoE?! Seriously. It’s the Democratic breadbasket of Ohio. Now, I’m not saying Bennett has broken any law or acted unethically, but the very appearance is enough to send this Democrat into partisan fits.
If we’re serious about fixing election problems in Ohio, I have a simple first step – if you’re the chair of a party (state or county), you can’t serve as chair of any BoE in Ohio. We should start with Bob Bennett. Might ruffle some feathers, but voter confidence in our elections is just more important.

There are other counties where the county chairs of the GOP and Dems are on the BOE and rotate the chairmanship. In some places (like ours) it seems to work out OK. And even if the Party chair was to be barred, the board member would still (in all likelihood) be a hard core partisan.
In some counties, it would be hard to find a Democrat who was willing to serve. It's a LOT of work for minimal bucks.
in my opinion, running our elections should be a full-time job. i'm not sure the current model -- boards of election for every county, regardless of size, generally run by party leadership -- is the best way to administer our elections.
in fact, i would argue that the best model would be a bi-partisan state board with co-directors (one dem, one rep) for each county or region (again, based on population, not political boundary).
by the way, there are certainly some places where it works and some where it doesn't. just ask editor about clermont county...
Nice job.
You know Coleman still calls me "Spidy" every time I see him...'cause I was his "webmaster". lol
