AG Endorsement Shows ORP Has Learned Nothing

It’s been mentioned already that I’ve had some other things to deal with recently, so it came as some surprise to hear from Joe over at Plunderbund that the Ohio Republican Party has so far refused to endorse a candidate for Attorney General.

I mean let’s look at this really, really tough decision they have before them:

Mike DeWine:

  • Former U.S. Senator.
  • Former Lt. Governor.
  • Former U.S. Representative.
  • Great name recognition.
  • Appeal to moderates and independents.

Dave Yost:

  • Delaware County Prosecutor (Do most Ohioans know where Delaware County even is?).
  • Doesn’t even have a Wikipedia entry.
  • No name recognition.
  • No hope of winning.
  • Conservative street cred.

How freakin’ hard is it? They’re so scared of upsetting the conservative fringe that they’re willing to sacrifice any chance they have of winning to appease them!

With opponents like the Ohio Republican Party, who needs friends!

Yost Is A Party Hack...let's hope he wins the primary

I presume this would be the same David Yost who is now conducting a frivolous so-called prosecution in Athens county against Democratic County Chair Susan Gwin. Dewine could be difficult to beat...all Democrats should be on their knees praying that the right wing of the Republican party has their way and nominates this guy. Cordray will have him for lunch. I'm not so sure, Bill,

that DeWhiny will be "difficult to beat." After 2006, I've reassessed my thinking about his appeal and acumen as a campaigner. I thought he'd be hard to beat then, what with incumbency and a lot more money than Sherrod and the sort of tepid personality where it's hard to get incensed against him. Of course, I wasn't taking into account his thoroughly inept campaign and the fact that he kept firing toy ammo at Sherrod with his inane issues ("Someone in Sherrod's office 20 years ago may have smoked pot!" "A decade ago Sherrod temporarily didn't pay some taxes after the bill went to the wrong address!") while Sherrod talked incessantly about the ONLY thing that mattered to Ohio voters then (and the ONLY thing that will matter next year) namely, the disappearance of jobs. DeWhiny would really have to step it up to beat Rich Cordray. He's going to have to go way beyond the usual, "We'll be harder on child molesters and sexual predators." When Cordray says, "We already deal with those, plus we're going afterpowerful companies who are ripping you off with lies," I don't think DeWhiny will have a compelling comeback. Actually, when did he EVER do or say anything compelling? As for Yost, maybe he can get his campaign jumpstarted by finding a gripping issue like — um, how many press releases Rich's office sends out. That worked really well for ... what was the guy's name again that ran against Rich last year?
