Aborting the Abortion Debate
The Dems are staying smart on this issue:
In the House, Reps. Tim Ryan, of Niles, a Democrat who opposes abortion, and Rosa DeLauro, Conn., a member of the Democratic leadership who supports abortion rights, are backing measures to make contraception easier to obtain while providing aid to women who proceed with unintended pregnancies. Ryan represents the Mahoning Valley's 17th Congressional District.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., helped smooth the path for the Ryan-DeLauro bill, and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Ill., the fourth-ranking House Democrat, is a co-sponsor. "This is something that Democrats are really into," Emanuel said.
At least four similar bills are circulating. Anti-abortion Democrats who are reluctant to promote contraception use are backing a more limited effort to help pregnant women and single mothers.
"You're going to see a change in the tone of the debate, and a move toward more solutions, rather than the divisiveness," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, a leading abortion rights group that signed on early to the prevention agenda. "What we're going to see in this Congress is some problem-solving."
In the 110th Dems are going to be looking more and more at how to make abortion safe, legal and rare (with a big emphasis on rare), rather than unrestricted abortion rights. If you're interested in reproductive rights, you really should read the whole article from the Vindy...
The debate's morphing.
UPDATE: The Dispatch has more (and Jill lists the NYTimes in the comments)

Well kudos to them. Being from the other side this sounds like a good attempt to try and address the problem that should satisfy both sides. don't agree with ryan on somethings, but like this thinking.
If you dont like something or are against it, work to solve the core cause in a productive way. Hopefully it picks up support from the right. This should not be about R & D letters after names. It should be about solving a problem.
Pro-choice or anti abortion - working to decrease the NEED of abortion is a great place to start. In fact the only place to start! This looks like a good middle ground that both sides can use to work together.
Jill, there will always be those instances. I won't and can't judge people in those instance. I am sure that is a tough decision and maybe many circumstances behind it. You are right it is for those women and/or couples to deal with on their own.
For the extreme Holy Rollers - well things happen and our God is forgiving when a person is sincere in their actions.
I am catholic, against abortion for birth control, and FULLY believe in contraception! For the same reason I would support a priest being allowed to get a little every now and then. Why? Because it is foolish to think we can stop human nature.
Never thought i would agree with NARAL but working towards a solution is much better than both sides being absolute in their views.

and I agree with it. Anybody's political reach should end at the front door of someones home. I do not back abortion as a form of birth control..however: Want to end abortion? Start research to find a safe and effective birth control for women, or dare I say, men.
Anti-contraception is a crowd that needs to stay out of peoples bedrooms...I mean, get a damn hobby or something.
I feel a guy has more of a duty to carry protection then a girl.
Yes, you cant forget the guys! Last I heard it had to be a man and a women to have sex.
Unless your true love is a Ken Blackwell action figure.
